The best song of 2008?

In its blatant, uncreative act of self-promotion highly unscientific roundup, AOL's "tastemaker" site Spinner.com unveiled its top song of 2008 the other day.

Among the choices: "Green Light" by John Legend Andre 3000 (No 25); "Chasing Pavements" by Adele (No 11); "Human" by The Killers (No 15).; "Keep Marching" by Raphael Saadiq; "Sex on Fire" by Kings of Leon; and "Paper Planes" by M.I.A. (No 4). (No link; SURELY you've heard that one by now!)

Even though we tend to find year-end-wrap up things pretty dull and corny, we agree with pretty much everything on here. All these songs are very much awesome, though we are dismayed to find some serious omissions, including cuts from last year's great albums by Santogold, (I'd pick "Creator") Madonna, ("Heartbeat"), Sugarland ("All I Want to Do") Erykah Badu ("Twinkle"), Al Green ("What More Do You Want From Me") or Coldplay ("Lost.") Also curious: nothing from TV on the Radio, which was on lots of critics best of.

And perhaps these "tastemakers" were trying to be avant garde, but in choosing the requisite Beyonce track, they oddly chose "If I Were A Boy" over "Single Ladies."

I suppose we should applaud them, however, for getting the most important track right: the Number One Song of 2008. They chose "Electric Feel" by MGMT. We feel no need to compelling reason to argue just for arguing's sake, because the song  makes you feel cool just by listening to it. Doesn't it ?

Way to go tastemakers.

The Best Song of 2008?

An easy choice. "Losing You" from Randy Newman's "Harps and Angels." The BBC described the song as "two minutes and 16 seconds of wonder: a perfect gem shining in the darkness." It is a very powerful - and emotional - piece of music. I suspect it will be covered before too long, and will then receive the exposure it deserves.

MANTIS

Mantis fever - catch it! The new album from Umphrey's McGee - Mantis - drops January 20.
