Lesvia Alvarado talks to relatives on her cell phone as what had been the family’s home is piled on the curb behind her. It was a Sunday afternoon in May, six days after a tornado ripped through several neighborhoods in Suffolk.

Writer Kristin Davis and I were looking for a family to follow as they rebuilt from the disaster. Lesvia, her husband, Ken, and their children, Kenny and Monica, opened their lives to us.
