From The Pilot

An occasional blog for news and announcements from the producers and editors of PilotOnline.com and The Virginian-Pilot.

Changes start in The Virginian-Pilot

To readers of The Virginian-Pilot:

Beginning Sunday, you will see changes to The Virginian-Pilot that will allow us to cut costs and improve parts of your newspaper.

 Sunday, Jan. 11

· The Weather page moves to the back of Classifieds. We have added a few features to Sunday weather page to make it more of a "look-ahead-to-the- week" page.

· The five city tabs -- the Clipper, Beacon, Current, Sun and Compass -- have been redesigned to feature more news coverage and more staff-produced stories. There will be a new cover design, a new city page on Page 3, columns from city hall and education reporters, the Pilot Warrior column and road construction information, Mary Reid Barrow's Coastal Journal (space permitting).

· Week in Review will be replaced by Eyewitness.

· "On the Job" stays in the Sunday business section.

· "On the Money" stays in the Sunday business section.

 Monday, Jan. 12

· There will be no business section. However, we will continue to cover business. More on that below. Business news will appear on the front page and in the Hampton Roads section where appropriate. We will continue to publish a Sunday Business section.

· The "Dilbert" comic will move from Business to the comics page, replacing "Sally Forth" every day except Sunday. "Sally Forth" was the second-least favorite strip among readers who responded to our survey.

· A full-page Business "Market Report" complete with information from the major markets, business briefs from around the world and the nation, and other pertinent business information, appears Tuesday through Saturday in the Main section.

· Our feature about names of streets, towns and places in Hampton Roads called "What's in a name?" has moved to Monday from Friday in the Hampton Roads section. You can read past "What's in a name" columns here: http://hamptonroads.com/2008/08/interactive-maps-whats-name

 Tuesday, Jan. 13

· Tech Talk will move to the cover of the Tuesday Daily Break as the main theme for that day's section. In addition, Fashion and Family coverage will be published on alternating weeks in Wednesday's Daily Break and a weekly restaurant review will move from Gracious Living to Thursday's entertainment calendar pages.

 Sunday, Jan. 18

· The "Common Ground" photo feature moves from Saturday in Hampton Roads to Sunday on the back page of the Daily Break.

· Eyewitness moves to the front of News2. We will no longer publish Week in Review, which was not popular with our readers.

 Monday, Jan. 19

· The Context page will appear inside the main section, moved from Thursday.

 More on the Business section

· We are keeping a full business team with a business editor. The team will write articles for the Main section and the Hampton Roads section of the paper.

· We will continue to publish a robust Sunday Business section.

· We will publish a one-page market report every day, with results from the major indices, stocks of local interest and pertinent local and national business briefs.

· We will continue to publish news about the national economy on the front page, when appropriate, and in the main section.

· We will not publish stocks pages anymore. They are available at http://hamptonroads.com/pilot/business.

· The Monday TechTalk section will become part of the Daily Break and will appear on Tuesdays.

Size of the paper

I have sent in a suggestion to no avail, change the size of the paper to the size of the Beacon! Easier to handle, less stress on your arms unless you lift weights and could look really hefty instead of skinny depending on the news and ads. Denver has it and I'm sure others do too.
AND a pull out section of the ads for those (meaning me!) who do not read the ads to shop. One Sunday morning the ads were in a neat little plastic wrap, although I hate plastic, but I was able to pull and toss the stuff I didn't want to read. Next Sunday? GONE! Oh well, can't have too much of a good thing!

You honestly don't know the difference, George K?

You really don't know the difference between commentators such as Rush, Hannity, Coulter (or Colmes, Matthews, Olberman for that matter) and straight news reports, George? If you do then your reply was intellectually dishonest. If you really don't it's not worth explaining.

Jack, the socialist agenda?

You must like those great objective journalist Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Glen Beck, Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh.

Here's a suggestion for another change, Dennis ...

How about less of a left-wing bias? The socialist agenda this paper has is sickening and the journalistic standards are non-existent.
