Chris Tyree's favorite photograph for 2008

I would have to say my favorite picture would be Virginia Beach police officer Michael Smith Phillips ’ funeral in August.

It was a hard picture to take, and I was reminded of my own son while making it. It is really hard to put into words the emotions that fill you as you focus on such an important and devastating moment. Hopefully, by showing the readers of The Virginian-Pilot such an intimate moment, something positive will result. That is my goal, that is why I do what I do – to make a difference.
