I selected an image from the photo column series I shot, “Waiting,” because of its understated simplicity of everyday life. The premise behind the “Waiting” column was to illustrate how often everyone has to wait – for something – and how waiting crossed every social, economic, racial, gender, age and educational line. Every day kids have to wait and are dependent on their parents for something, and I just loved the gentle innocence tinged with a bit of curiosity, longing and uncertainty in the boy’s posture. The shaft of light really helped to define the mood as well. Waiting doesn’t have to be an agitated and inpatient state of mind or activity but can be quiet, understated, even a calming break from the constant traffic of everyday life.
