Nye and Warner join Virginia's Democrats in D.C. on Tuesday

WASHINGTON

Hampton Roads will get two new voices in the nation’s capital on Tuesday, as Rep.-elect Glenn Nye and Sen.-elect Mark Warner take their oaths of office.

Nye and Warner, both Democrats, will be sworn in during separate ceremonies at midday.

Nye, 34, a Norfolk resident and former foreign service officer, defeated incumbent Republican Thelma Drake in the November election. His district includes Virginia Beach, the Eastern Shore and portions of Norfolk and Hampton.

Nye is one of three newly elected Democrats in the state’s U.S. House delegation, which will have a Democratic majority (6-5) for the first time since 2000.

Warner, 54, is an Alexandria resident who served as governor from 2002-06. He succeeds five-term Republican John Warner, who opted not to seek re-election. He joins Sen. Jim Webb to give Virginia two Democrats in the upper house for the first time since the 1960s.
