Did Ryan Newman quit on his team last year?

At first the idea seems out there, yet David Stremme, who is replacing Ryan Newman in the 12 car this year at Penske, initially hinted at something like that while talking to reporters in a conference call Wednesday.

Things started when I asked Stremme about how Penske can climb into the level that Roush, Hendrick, Childress and Gibbs are are _ since there is truly a gap between those teams and everyone else.

Here's what Stremme said (I've highlighted what he said about Newman): "I think a lot had to do with people and Roger (Penske) and Tim Cindric are very good at that. They've had a lot of changes here. One of the things you've got to look at is you had Sam Hornish come in here, he was a rookie, he was going through all kinds of new things like a new environment and learning the stock cars and not having much experience and he had a lot of highs and lows.

You had Ryan Newman who was here, started out the season very well and then he knew he was leaving. It was kind of, he done a very good job but he knew he was on his way out and he was going to do other things.

“And then you had Kurt there who was on an island by himself, who was looking around like I need some teammates to lean on and him and Sam were talking, but it’s like I said, Sam was learning. And then as a company, they had management changes, they had different personnel. I felt through all of that, that was a building year. You look at the end of the season of Penske and how they run, especially with the new Dodge motors that’s out, the RO-7, Kurt run second there at Phoenix, was strong all day. They had strong runs a lot of places like Charlotte and Atlanta. Those had to do with results of how hard everybody has been working. When you just look at the state of racing and the economy and everything else, Penske Racing is strong. We’re very fortunate to have three great partners like Alltel, Miller and Mobil One and then we had AAA come on board. They haven’t released anybody here. We’ve been working forward to try to make the products better, and I feel that they’re doing that with building us new cars and doing a lot of research and testing and a lot of other teams are just looking to survive and stay afloat and letting people go and that’s where I feel our strength has been.

So, after hearing that I asked him more about Newman.

Q: One of the things I want to clarify, I hear what the organization is doing and I understand what you’re talking about with Sam Hornish being a rookie and his struggles, you mention with Ryan, saying he did a good job at the start of the year and then he was going to look to do other things. I want to make sure I’m clear on that, are you almost suggesting that he kind of gave up on the team or the organization last year?

"I don’t think Ryan gave up at all,'' Stremme said. "It’s just as a driver and as a team you see toward the end of the year there’s a lot of things happening. He finished out the year strong. He done a very exceptional job, I thought. But it’s just hard to build when you take Kurt’s team, they were working on a lot of setups and different things for the next year where say, some of the other teams, you might have just been like, hey we’re still running things and working on stuff. It’s hard to kind of explain but there is a little bit of a setting there if you’re going to another organization that it’s in your mind that, hey, I’m leaving and I’m going to a better place they feel.’’

So, Stremme says Newman stayed with it but still you get the sense that Stremme (remember he was a test driver for Penske last year while racing in the Nationwide series for Rusty Wallace's team) suggests that Newman wasn't all into things late last year.

Coincidence or not _ and certainly there were a lot of factors with the struggles with the team _ Newman had only two top-10 finishes in the final 20 races of last year. The qualifying ace that he is only had three top-10 starts during that same time.

I called Newman's PR person to see if he had a comment on this. She said he was out of town and declined to comment, preferring to look ahead to this year as Stewart embarks on his first season with Stewart Haas Racing and as a teammate to Tony Stewart.

So, what do you think? There's something to what Stremme said. Or Stremme's wrong. Or this is a lot about nothing?

Ryan newman

First of all, I registered at your website JUST to comment on your pathetic comments on Newman. I don't know what Stremme's deal is, but he was testing for Penske NOT racing. Therefore, he did not listen weekend after weekend when Newman would struggle to avoid going a lap down while racing in junk. He must not have seen the races where Newman was hanging on to a "wicked loose" car just to finish 18th. The results of the last races of 2008 were a result of the highly flawed Dodge and Jasper motors evidenced by the equally poor results of the 2 team. Stremme must not have checked the standings before he opened his mouth. If Kurt Busch is expecting help from a teammate like Sam Hornish who is still using the wall to make the turns, he IS in tough shape and NOT because of Newman. Some better sources for the writer to consult would be Roy McCauley who had to calm Newman down when his competitive spirit caused him to be frustrated not only in trying to win, but also to fight every pass, on every lap at every single race. Just in case all that is not enough, ask his Dad who is his spotter who had to answer the question Ryan asks at every race, even when he is 10 laps down trying

2 out of 3 ain't bad

Yea, there's something to it, but still a lot about nothing. It's more like he didn't try to give his old team any edge that would be gained w/extra effort. Basically just not giving 110%, just 100%. I think what would've been better for him to do was bust his butt & try to get everything out of the old car/team & then he'd have a better baseline for where his new car/team is @. If you didn't get everything out of the old car how are you going to know where you stack w/the new car/team? There comes a time when you're resigned to your fate & your heart just isn't in it as much as when you know you're staying put. Look @ Dale Jr. once he was out of the hunt for the chase, he didn't appear to be getting up on the wheel & driving as hard as when the chase started. Again, just 100%, not 110%. I think it's called human nature, but if I was paying those guys, I'd be looking for 110%. If I wasn't getting it, time to let you go early, so I can get that 110% driver behind the wheel. Remember, if you're not pushing the envelope, you're getting left behind.

Newman giving up - cmon!

Newman did all he could to try to win races. The problem was the equipment. Lack of horsepower. Engines blew up. Tires were inadequate. Inexperienced drivers causing wrecks.Bad luck.

I have to wonder, if there was anything to remarks by Stremme, did our friend Rusty Wallace have anything to do with this? He is the same guy that claimed Ryan was fired from Penske, when he wasn't. If that is true, Stremme should learn to keep his mouth shut til he knows facts, rather than listening to and parroting inaccurate information.
