BLACKSBURG, Va.
Investigators are seeking computer and cell phone records and diaries as they try to figure out why a Virginia Tech student allegedly used a kitchen knife to decapitate a female student in a campus coffee shop.
A Tech police officer arrived Wednesday night to find Haiyang Zhu, 25, holding 22-year-old Xin Yang's head in his hands, according to an affidavit filed Thursday.
Zhu is being held without bond on a first-degree murder charge. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 5. His attorney, Stephanie Cox, has not returned calls seeking comment.
Yang arrived on campus two weeks ago from Beijing and had only recently met Zhu, a doctoral student in agricultural and applied economics from Ningbo, China.
The two were drinking coffee on the Blacksburg campus before the attack. Witnesses told police they hadn't been arguing.
Yang's slaying was the first on campus since April 2007, when a student gunman shot 32 people and then took his own life.
Alone in a new country, Yang reached out to other Chinese students, trying to establish her life on campus.
She went to social events with international students, got in touch with the campus center that helps them adjust and appeared to be making friends as she settled into her accounting program, those who had met her said.
Zhu had been assisting Yang in adjusting to life at Tech, something the 500 Chinese students often do for new members in their community, said Kim Beisecker, the director of Cranwell International Center, which works with international students. They both attended functions for international students, she said.
"She was a very sweet young woman," she said. "He was known as a polite young man."
Though they apparently didn't know each other well, school records listed Zhu as one of her emergency contacts. Beisecker said that may have been because Yang knew few people on campus.
The details of the killing were outlined at a news conference Thursday.
Witnesses told police there was no sign of an argument before the attack, Police Chief Wendell Flinchum said. The two were sitting at a table having coffee at the Au Bon Pain cafe in the Graduate Life Center, he said.
Seven people - customers and Au Bon Pain staff - saw the attack and fled the restaurant. Two people called 911, he said.
Flinchum said that as far as he knows, no one tried to intervene in the attack and witnesses did not report Zhu yelling anything before or during the attack.
When police arrived less than two minutes later, they discovered Yang's body, Zhu and an 8-inch kitchen knife that police said he brought to the cafe and used in the attack. Zhu did not resist arrest.
Zhu was not called to the attention of Tech or Blacksburg police before Wednesday, Flinchum said. Nor had he been called to the attention of the university's threat assessment or Care teams - university groups designed to deal with troubled students.
Joe Epperly, a Tech senior majoring in animal and poultry sciences, had Zhu as a graduate teaching assistant in his marketing agriculture products class.
"He was always friendly and helpful throughout that class," Epperly said via e-mail. "Others who knew him through that same experience had nothing but good things to say about him."
There were few obvious signs of the tragedy on campus Thursday as students went about their third day of classes this semester.
At Thursday's news conference, Tech President Charles Steger offered condolences to the victim and her family and referred back to the shootings.
"An act of violence like this brings back memories of April 16, and I have no doubt that many of us feel especially distraught," he said. "Once again we are challenged as a community to offer support for one another."

VT Decapitation
As a resident of Florida, I had intended to post a comment of how less likely this incident would have been in an area with more liberal concealed carry weapons permits, but I see the fine citizens of Virginia have recognized and already responded appropriately.
Florida's violent crime rate dropped 83% the first year when weapons permit issuance became mandatory unless there was a valid reason to deny.
When asked why I carry a gun or other weapon I always tell people, "It's a lot easier to carry a 22 ounce Glock pistol than a 200+ pound cop." The police are only there to investigate crime and enforce the law. They are not personal body guards and will never get to you in time (if at all) when you call about a life threatening situation.
This story is a lot like the Luby's cafeteria story in Texas, a few years back. One shot could have saved this young girl's life. The others in the coffee shop are just lucky he didn't go after them as well. Sometimes, violent force is the only way to deal with people that "aren't wired right."

There you go again, assuming. I support the bill of rights. Which, I believe, has nothing to do with this horrific murder. If frogs had legs... well, you know.
OMG..................
Grisly! The witnesses may need counseling after witnessing a decapitation.....Oh my.
More research before we are blessed with a GFZ
As part of your research did you consider the NAZIs? Their first order of business after invasion was to create a "Guns Free Zone?" This afforded the NAZIs the opportunity to terrorize the unarmed citizens. This was true with the average citizen who wasn't a Ba'ath party member in Iraq too.
Gun Free Zones ARE the solution!
"Response to Gun Free Zone, Submitted by ktatc"
ktatc, your rebuttal to my comments about the dangerous environment that Gun Free Zones always generate has convinced me. Now, I'm on your side. I agree that the only way to address the abominations that murderers commit is to declare every square inch of America to be a Gun Free Zone.
I didn't come to this decision lightly. I did A LOT of research. Here’s the website that finally convinced me that declaring America to be a Gun Free Zone is the only solution...

You said, "How can I use this to advance my own agenda? Dang! I've got nothing!"
Not in this case, but you have shown in the past that had a firearm been used you would be all over it.
VB2NC, I couldn't agree more with your post. I would rather that my fellow Second Amendment advocates would take the high road and not use a tragedy to make (or try to make) a point. Let's leave that to the other side, shall we? You know, the people who conducted an absurd lie-in wearing VT paraphernalia to demonstrate the need to close the "gun show loophole," despite the fact that no loophole exists and that Cho didn't acquire his weapons from a gun show in any case.
'emergency contact'
kb1800 (second post),
A Washington Post article says "At Virginia Tech, newly arrived international students from China are usually paired with other international students who have been at the school at least one semester to help them acclimate to their new environment."
The victim and her killer didn't meet on their own - Va Tech hooked them up.
The person is always a "quiet, nice guy" or the equivalent.

How come the media always gets away with reporting something
like this and not being criticized for doing more in-depth
interviewing of people who know the accused killer??!
From the article, it says: "'Joe Epperly, a Tech senior majoring in animal and poultry sciences, had Zhu as a graduate teaching assistant in his marketing agriculture products class.
'He was always friendly and helpful throughout that class,' Epperly said via e-mail. 'Others who knew him through that same experience had nothing but good things to say about him.'"
ARRRGGGHHHH!!!

i hope they
give him the death penalty! The police should do us all a favor and let the punishment be swift!
VBAttorney - don't judge a book by its cover
You seem to have misinterpreted my prior post. Where did you get the idea that my previous post represented the actions of "touchy-feely do-nothing types". I'm a NRA card carrying, lifelong Republican. What I said is that people are losing sight of the fact that a young woman was killed in a HIDEOUS manner. All the while, pontificating without substantive facts, and making pitiful jokes about having a "knife ban" or "anti-knife lobby". It is disrespectful to the victim, uncouth, low class, and solves nothing politically or otherwise. Perhaps we should get more of the facts before we attempt to solve the problem.
