General Assembly to stream session online

RICHMOND

Virginians will be able to watch live broadcasts of the House of Delegates’ session online for the first time.

Speaker William Howell, R-Stafford, announced Friday that the House will begin streaming video of its session Wednesday, when the General Assembly convenes for a 46-day session.

The Senate already has been streaming its sessions. House Republican leaders have in the past refused, arguing it would cause legislators to grandstand, politicize debate and slow consideration of bills.

House Democrats, in pushing for streaming had argued that the debate was already highly politicized and Republicans didn’t want the public to see it.

The House video stream can be accessed through the General Assembly’s web site, http://legis.virginia.gov.
