Waggin' Tails

Wondering what you can do with your dog in Hampton Roads? Get the answers here. I'll be discussing dog care, nutrition, training, play, and games to play with your dog.

Pet owners should be well informed when it comes to caring for their pet. Recalls on food ingredients, brand name foods, and toys make it necessary for pet parents to have information. But there is so much information it would make your head spin. Angie has a knack for getting and sorting this information. Having run two pet related businesses and having rescued two dogs so far, she has years of experience in pet care and training. For questions or comments, you can contact her at bigdogmom@mailpuppy.com.

Happy 2009!

Well, the holidays are over. Hope everyone had a great time. Munchkin got an oversized fleece blanket to keep warm with. Mac got a new soccer ball which is in my living room because he didn’t want it to get wet.

There was a recall and an FDA caution over the holidays too. The recall is from Solid Gold canned dog food. They say there were reports of moldy food in the turkey, ocean fish, carrot and sweet potato formula. The can has a pop-top, a purple label, and weighs 13.2 ounces. The date on the bottom is 01/02/2010. The cans without a pop-top aren’t in the recall. For more info, check out the website at http://www.solidgoldhealth.com/news/

The FDA caution is about chicken jerky treats for dogs that are imported from China. It’s not about a specific brand but all jerky treats imported from China. Most dogs recover but several dogs have died. Dogs get very ill with vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, or only wanting to eat the treats, decreased activity, increased consumption of water and/or excessive urination. Blood test may indicate kidney failure and urine tests may indicate Fanconi syndrome (increased glucose). Symptoms start within several hours or several days of eating the treats. The FDA doesn’t know why dogs are getting sick. They haven’t found any contamination in any of the ingredients. Your best bet is to just leave these treats alone. Better yet, make your own. They’re easy to do and you know exactly what is in them.

So, have you made your New Year’s Resolutions yet? I don’t make them but Mac had a few ideas. Here’s his list:

1. I will exercise more. Even if it means pulling Mom down the street. She’ll just have to learn to keep up.

2. I will beg less. Now that I know how to get on the counters, I shouldn’t have to beg very much at all.

3. Munchkin is going to stay out of the cat’s litter box. I know she’ll do it unless she just has to have a really good dessert.

4. I’ll try not to pee on the vet’s hallway floor anymore. I’m really good, but after I get examined, I just can’t hold it any longer. I’ll try to wait until I get out the door.

5. I won’t steal food. Besides, getting food off the counters while it’s cooling isn’t stealing. I’m just taste testing it.

6. I’ll try not to bark at the people walking down my street anymore. However, if they stop in front of my house, I’ll have to let them know to move on. And those kids on skateboards don’t count. It is MY street, and it’s my job to keep it safe.

7. I’ll try to let Mom have the ball and Frisbee more often. I haven’t learned how to throw them yet and she can throw pretty good. I just don’t like to share.

Well, I hope you like Mac’s list. I’m not too sure about number one though. Hope you stay dry and safe today.
