The Virginian-Pilot

It was one of those gloomy, cold and wet April days. Sailors were lined up on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier George Washington, as it got ready to depart to its new station in Yokosuka, Japan. The steam from the pier’s pipeline was forming a fog around the ship. It was somewhat eerie and somber. I tried to compose the picture to emphasize the sentiments of the GW’s last departure from Norfolk.
