Neo-Nazi materials found outside homes in N.C.

Posted to: News North Carolina

Fliers from a white-supremacist group were found in newspaper boxes in Moyock, N.C., early Saturday morning, authorities said.

At least two residents reported receiving materials from the National Socialist Movement in the boxes in front of their homes, according to Sheriff Susan Johnson.

The flier stated that the country was missing a legitimate president. It also contained a post office box address from Detroit and a telephone number.

"No one else at this point has reported receiving the fliers, but I am positive that it was not just these two," Johnson said.

The first incident was reported shortly before 9:30 a.m. Saturday on Camellia Drive, off South Mills Road. Minutes later, a second resident flagged down a sheriff's deputy near Puddin Ridge Road.

Johnson was not sure how widespread the distribution of the fliers was but said that whoever placed them in the newspaper boxes did not violate any laws.

"It's not criminal," she said. "Anything that puts out any kind of information about hate or biased opinions, of course, concerns me. They were certainly allowed to express their opinions."

Let them speak out

I say let the hate groups speak their venomous views and pass out their materials - so long as they have the guts to identify themselves and where they're from. It makes it easier to identify the idiots and locate them if they cause trouble later.

North Carolina Nazis

I hate North Carolina Nazis...

It is far more alarming

that some idiots commenting here believe that one's viewpoint determines whether they are protected by the first amendment.

Not a Crime

Please reread the article. This was not a crime because the fliers were placed in the NEWSPAPER boxes, not the mail boxes. I love it when they preach this stuff in person, it lets me know who the crazies are. I agree with the previous posts, there is hate preached daily on TV, although is is usually against the "white man". I defend their right to say this junk, and thank God every day that He gave me parents that taught me how to deal with people like this. Thankfully, VERY VERY VERY few of these nut jobs result in actual violence. I'd rather my police force focus on gnags and thugs that are killing innocents everyday. I'm not saying ignore them, just remember, you have to fight stupidity with intelligence, not on their level.

not a crime?

Actually, it's illegal for anyone other than authorized federal employees to place ANYTHING in a mailbox PERIOD. You may have bought your mailbox, but it is still federal property. Opening someone else's mailbox is ILLEGAL. Placing racist papers in absolutely unavoidable locations (like a school, mailbox, or even in a plastic newspaper bag thrown on someone's lawn)- also ILLEGAL. Even if mailboxes weren't federal property- freedom of speech does not allow you to break into someone else's property and spew hate of any kind. The FBI shouldn't commit too many resources to small fry stuff like this, but the Pilot (and the police department) should know better than to call illegal activity freedom of speech.

Technically; it is freedom of speach

I may not agree with your opinion sir, but i will defend to the death your right to say it
Thomas Jefferson
Timothy McVeigh is a matter for us to consider where our so-called homeland security money is going but not necessarily synchronous to Neo-Nazi. Fear has it's way to the convolution of things. Yes, Hate groups should be monitored but our military men and women fight for these rights that separate us from other countries.
I just feel compelled to point out the differences so that people interested in mass hysteria don't shift the paradigm because without these inalienable rights we have nothing. I happen to be of an ethic group reviled by Neo Nazis. However, the rights created by our fore-fathers have been subject to manipulation by Bush/Cheney and we must come back to center and never again return to a practice whereby fear dictates our actions away from these Democritus ideas because to do so is to reinforce these ideological suppositions that are fascist in nature.

So your saying a black man has never preached hate towards a white president? No black man has ever said Bush hates blacks or it was Bushs fault for Katrina? Come on man Jesse Jackson, Farahkhan(sp) Rev White, and Al Sharpton all preach hate do you not own a t.v. Why after 400 years of slavery should you be mad? You werent a slave!! Hell either were you parents, grandparents, or great grandparents for that matter. My ancestors were treated like crap to should I also be mad or should I do my part and get over it and try to make it better? Heck that would be like saying all Jewish people hate Germans and what the holocaust happened what 60 years ago while slavery ended what 200 years ago! I'm sure the Jews figured out that not all Germans hated Jews now it's time for blacks to figure out that not all us white people hate them and not all our ancestors owned slaves

Here it is 2009 and you still have fools out there preaching hate. This country has been a melting pot for years and always will be. There is room enough for every man, woman and child of all races. We had white president's for years but as a black man never preached hate towards them. After 400 years of slavery I

Constitution

Whether you like it or not, free speech is protected by the constitution. Be it racist or prejudiced, the right to free speech is guarenteed.

They can be recruting, or preaching hatred, it doesn't matter, it is protected free speech.

Just as YOUR freedom of speech AGAINST the producers of this hate filled racist idiocy is prtoected by law.

You can't have it both ways.

First Amendment

It is freedom of speech whether you want to accept or not. When you start limiting this person or that person from saying something then where do you draw the line? You can't. Granted you can't say you want to whack the Prez but the fliers never said that. It just said the country was missing a legitimate president. The fact is these Neo-Nazis or hate groups are good for society because it reminds us how stupid and igornant some people can be. Yes it's pure hatred and it's sad that in 2009 people still feel that way but the fact of the matter is you have the right to your opinion no matter how dumb it may be. However I have the right to ignore you and tell myself that I'm a better person because I'm enlighten unlike these morons which spew stupidity. Finally, I rather these people make as much noise as possible because it's the quiet ones like Timothy McVey I worry about.
