Twenty-year-old Jeremy Powers had been drinking at a party June 28, his mother said, when a fight broke out. Powers was knocked unconscious, but he wasn't bleeding when he was carried to a bedroom.
That night, he vomited repeatedly and his friends thought he would sleep off the booze. But he never regained consciousness and by morning, Jeremy Powers was dead.
A medical examiner said Powers had sustained a blow to his head, which caused severe bleeding. Investigators doubted that the trauma came from a blunt object but said it could have happened during a fall.
Despite numerous interviews of witnesses, it's still unclear what happened. Now, Powers' family wants to know whether a person inflicted a fatal blow and, if so, that the person be charged.
With the case still under investigation, the Powers family has taken extraordinary steps to find answers, going as far as bringing witnesses to the detective bureau.
Nothing has helped, and the case remains unsolved. Some witnesses fear that the three carloads of uninvited guests who crashed the party were gang members, said Diane Powers, Jeremy's mother. No one wants to be a "snitch," she said.
"We just want justice," Diane Powers said.
That night, police were dispatched to the 300 block of 33rd St. for a call that people were fighting. No one was outside when officers arrived. There was no answer to a knock on the door and the officer left, police spokeswoman Margie Long said.
Jeremy Powers had gone to sleep. When his friends checked on him at 11:30 the next morning, he didn't respond, Long said.
For the next several months, Diane Powers said she felt like a detective. She called the last few numbers he dialed on his cell phone. She found some people who were willing to talk.
Diane Powers and her husband, Stephen, continued to gather statements from the partygoers, meeting potential witnesses in apartment complexes and parking lots.
"My wife is constantly trying to stir the pot," Stephen Powers said.
The problem was that the witnesses told Powers and police different stories. Some said they were too drunk to remember anything that would help the investigation.
"The kids that say they were Jeremy's friends should do the right thing," Diane Powers said. "I'm not going to say he was kid who didn't get in trouble, but Jeremy didn't deserve this."
As winter came and still there were no answers, Diane Powers posted a bulletin on a social networking site. One person responded but reneged on an agreement to talk to detectives, saying he feared retaliation from a gang.
The Powerses still are seeking evidence - and answers.
"What choice do I have?" she said. "I'm not going to stop until justice is served. I don't know what else to do."

:( this gets me mad from
:( this gets me mad from time to time that no one will come forward with it, Not everyone is perfect.and its stupid that even though hes dead people are still gonna talk crap. and not give the respect that should to be given.
the age is not the issue here
The drinking age is 21 yes,but that should be the last issue here. I dont know ONE person who waited till they were 21 to drink alcohol for the first time. And i know plenty of people who are of the legal drinking age who are more imature then a 20yr old... I was a friend of Jeremys and he did not deserve this. Those "gang members" need to grow up and see the severness in this and come forward. Killing someone does not make you kool. I agree with the Mom,he was murdered, whoever caused the trauma should be the one held responsible. His friends who were there had no idea of his condition. The sad thing is,is the person who did this knows who they are,and has to have known what happened to Jeremy. And they cant do the least they can do and come forward. Or somebody who knows something! Mrs.Powers,i applaud you in fighting for Justice, you are not alone in wanting the truth.
Jeremy Powers
Rather he was 20 or 21 no one deserves to lose there life like Jeremy did. All of us at one point in our lives have been at a party, rather it be New Years Eve, Company Party, Birthday, etc., rather or not alcohol WAS involved, drinking or not drinking NO ONE deserves to be hurt or even die... Un-wanted guest showed up at that party and started a fight..Jeremy was a typical 20 year old, at a party with his friends, not at all thinking he would be in danger.. And me personally I have fallin plenty of times and hit my head, but never hard enough to kill me, I find it hard to believe that this was an accident, and that he fell so hard that it cracked his skull and killed him, something else had to be the cause...Even if his death was caused by a fall, whoever caused him to fall should be punished, and I hope the person responsible for this rots in jail, and if the Va Beach police keeps their shotty investigating up and not finding out who these "gang" members are I hope that the person that did this, read the article and find it hard to live with themselves, but I guess if you are low of enough of a person to be in a gang then something like this probably doesnt even bother you, I thi
Jeremy's Mom
Your right the legal drinking age is still 21. The kids at the house that night didn't want to get in trouble with the police, that's why they carried him in the house and turned off the lights. The kids at the house said the police never came to the door and I was told the police didn't go to the door that night. So why are they now saying they did?? There is so much more to this story. The Virginia Beach Police messed this case up from the begaining. The whole story should be told, not just what the police want you to know.
And?
So, he was only 20. For all we know, his 21st birthday could have been the very next day. His age has nothing to do with the fact that his parents suspect foul play and his so called friends don't have the testicular fortitude to tell what they know.
Sad Indeed,But.....
Last time I checked, the legal drinking age was still 21. There's probably a reason for that.
Sad
Jeremy had the great misfortune of having ignorant and cowardly friends.
