Pit bulls that killed dog in Kitty Hawk put down

Posted to: News North Carolina

Two pit bulls that got into a fenced yard and killed a Labrador in Kitty Hawk were put down Friday.

The owner of the 1½-year-old neutered male and a 4-year-old spayed female signed paperwork to turn them over to the Dare County Animal Shelter, said director Denise Lambiotte.

Lambiotte said the dogs were then “humanely euthanized.”

The dogs were picked up Jan. 23 after District Attorney Frank Parrish was granted a motion to seize them. Their owner, Nikki Canady, had been cited with a leash law violation by Kitty Hawk police after the attack Jan. 19, and the dogs were taken to the shelter. The pit bulls killed a 7-year-old Labrador named Jazz that lived with owners Mark and Diane Kent.

The shelter did not have the legal power to hold the pit bulls, so they were released to Canady, who brought them home, according to Lambiotte.

Concern for the safety of children and dogs in the neighborhood prompted the police department to ask the district attorney for help, said Kitty Hawk police Chief David Ward.

To Kimber

This has nothing to do with pit bulls, it is all about dog owners not ensuring that their pets do not commit this type of mayhem. I am happy that 2 DOGs that have proven to be a menace have been put down.

no bad dogs

I lost my pit last year due to a heart attack. He was 11 yrs old and NEVER bit growled or showed any agression towards anyone. Everyone that knew him loved him and he is missed every day. It's not the breed but the owner. I am sure she feels horrible right now but you can't condem every pit for the actions of two. If richards comments are correct then what's up with the kids now a days???? Just kids or is it their upbringing??? Do we euthanize the ones that do something wrong the first time??

The right but difficult choice

This was the correct decision. Pitbulls instinct is to bite, chew and shack things. They are not a good breed to live with people and other dogs. Our neighbor has one and he loves to lock his jaws on large sticks and tear them apart. We hope he does not decide to do that with our Lab. Pit bulls should not be breed. It is nature not nurture that makes them what they are. Any owner of a Pit Bull who can keep it from attacking an killing should be congratulated.

Myspace photos

I wonder if the VP had permission to use those photos from her myspace page?

Anyways, just another lesson in responsibility, kid...
