Police: Truck was speeding before fatal N.C. crash

Posted to: News North Carolina

An investigation was continuing after a woman was killed early Tuesday when the pickup truck she was in ran off Weeksville Road and hit a culvert.

Ashley Overton, 19, of Elizabeth City, died after the driver ran off the right side of the road in Pasquotank County, overcorrected and ran off the left side before flipping three times and hitting the culvert, said Trooper D.M. Banks of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Stephen A. Meads, 38, of Elizabeth City, also in the truck, was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with life-threatening injuries, Banks said.

Authorities have not determined whether Overton or Meads was driving, Banks said. Neither person was wearing seat belts. The truck apparently was speeding, he said.

The accident occurred Tuesday morning just after midnight on Weeksville Road near Crocker Hill Road, he said. No other vehicles were involved.
