Steve Downie snapped a 2-2 tie midway through the second period and Norfolk goalie Mike McKenna made it stand up as the shorthanded Admirals downed Portland 3-2 Saturday night in Portland, Maine.
The victory snapped the Admirals' two-game losing streak and salvaged the finale of their three-game road trip. The Admirals (14-18-1-4) will kick off a nine-game homestand Wednesday against Hershey.
Admirals defenseman Mike Lundin scored for the second time in as many games and Chris Lawrence added a shorthanded tally. McKenna, who was pulled after two periods in Friday 's 5-1 loss in Worcester, earned No. 1 star honors Saturday after denying 34 shots, including all 13 he saw in the third period.
Norfolk prevailed despite the absence of forward Brandon Segal, who is tied for the team lead in goals with 12. Segal missed his third straight game with a wrist injury. The Admirals were also without defensemen Vladimir Mihalik, Matt Smaby and Ty Wishart, all on NHL assignment with Tampa Bay.
Earlier Saturday, the Admirals signed defenseman Mitch Ganzak of ECHL Wheeling to a tryout contract.
