Strangers gathered on a cold winter day. They glanced at the small white casket. The infant’s body had been found in a trash bin two years earlier. No one had ever claimed her.
The chaplain said his prayers. A few tears were shed. Police officers, dressed in long black overcoats, stood together. They had never found the child’s family. They came to say goodbye, to let the child know she was loved.
People looked away, lost in thoughts of love and life, innocence and loss.
