Police are investigating two cases of animal cruelty reported to officers during the New Year’s holiday.
On Dec. 31, a man called police to report a dead dog in the 8800 block of Gates Road, said Debbie George, city spokeswoman.
The man told police that he saw someone pull onto a hunting path on Gates Road and take a dog out of a cage on the back of his truck, George said. The man heard a gunshot, then a dog yelp. When he went to investigate, he found the dog dead.
The case is being investigated by animal control, George said.
Some time between Jan. 2 and 3, police got a call from a woman that someone apparently had tried to cut her dog’s throat, George said.
The dog was in the woman’s yard in the 200 block of N. 5th St., George said. The dog was taken to an emergency veterinarian and was expected to be fine earlier today, but was later euthanized on the advice of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, George said.
That case also remains under investigation, George said.

The Hunter Should be Shot
No one in their right mind? There are some Suffolk hunters who have the rule that if the dogs won't hunt, they refuse to feed them. These hunters think they're being humane by killing the animal outright. Then there are the hunters who don't want to feed them in the winter, so they kill them and get new ones the following season. These guys are the ones who need to be shot.
so many sicko's
and so little time to find and throw them under the jail. No one in their right mind will kill a defenseless animal. No one!
