Va. Beach drunk driver gets 5 years for woman's death

VIRGINIA BEACH

A Virginia Beach man who killed a woman in a drunken driving crash in May was sentenced today to five years in prison.

Clyde D. Covington Jr., 30, pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated involuntary manslaughter, drunken driving and failing to obey a traffic signal related to the May 4 crash at Lynnhaven Parkway and Rosemont Road. Jane Gardner, 39, was killed.

Judge William “Buster” O’Brien sentenced Covington to 15 years, with all but five suspended, on the manslaughter charge. O’Brien also ordered Covington to serve 30 days for driving under the influence and pay $600 in fines.
