The guardian of presidents isn't being very nice to the Mother of Presidents.
On Inauguration Day, the U.S. Secret Service will close all bridges crossing the Potomac River from Virginia to Washington and bar vehicles from interstates 66 and 395.
The Secret Service's caution is understandable, of course. Protecting the president is serious business.
Even so, quite a few Virginians are understandably perplexed by the logistical snub, especially since the state voted for the new president. If a Virginian - or anyone coming from the South -wants to get to the District, is it really necessary to send them through Maryland, where links with the nation's capital will remain open?
Residents of the Old Dominion will adapt, of course. We're more hardy and creative in the absence of vending machines and Port-O-Potties than most folks.
If George Washington could cross the icy Delaware River, his fellow Virginians surely won't flinch at the thought of a brisk trip through Maryland or across the Potomac.
Bring your oars, your tricorn hats and your coolers, citizens. We're going in.
