Woman killed when tree falls on van in Sussex

Strong winds were blamed for downing a tree that fell on a van in Sussex County on Wednesday, killing a woman and injuring her husband.

Linda Edwards, 52, of Gatesville, N.C., suffered fatal injuries when the tree fell on the van she was riding in about 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Cotten said.

Edwards' husband, David S. Edwards, was driving on Va. 35 near Newville Road when the tree fell, Cotten said. He suffered minor injuries, but two young boys riding in the van weren't hurt, she said.

Linda Edwards died en route to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, Cotten said.
