Congressional bill may reimburse Md., Va. for inauguration

Posted to: Elections Nation - World News Virginia

A measure in Congress would reimburse $20 million to Maryland and Virginia for costs incurred during President Barack Obama's inauguration.

Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski, Congressman Steny Hoyer and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley made the announcement today in Annapolis, Md.

The money is in a portion of the 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act, which will soon be considered by the House of Representatives.

Maryland officials say it has not been determined how the money would be allocated between the two states. They estimate Maryland spent more than $11 million to provide security measures during Obama's train ride through the state, which included a stop in Baltimore.

Part of the bill also includes $35 million to reimburse the District of Columbia for inaugural costs.

Waste of money and Virginia is 3.9 billion short.

Way too much money was spent on this thing. Kaine never should have released any money. If Washington wanted to use Virginia’s resources, they should have been paid for up front. What say so did VA have in running the activities? None. Just have Virginian's pay the bill. How many of the other States had to pay anything beside MD? Probably none.

$11 million for security?

Who can believe a man who claims to cut the budget in half and allow MD to spend $11 for a ego enhancing train ride? And dare I ask, how much did Virginia spend and what was it for? I didn't say you could spend my money. If I wanted to support the party I would have contributed the money to the DNC.
