Dale Jr. discusses Daytona wreck and pit road problems
Dale Earnhardt Jr. talked Friday about his Daytona 500 wreck, his pit road problems and his incident with Jeff Burton. Here's what Dale Jr. was asked and what he said:
On fan reaction: It’s not been too bad. I did get ripped up quite a bit. It’s kind of different being on that side of it.
Bother you: “No, not really. It was interesting to be on this side of the fence. I’m not on this side too much. It will all turn around as much as it blew up.
Fans: Some are really supportive and some aren’t. You’re either on one side or the other I guess.
What do differently: “I definitely could have used better judgment coming up the race track. It’s hard to tell. There was rain coming. I was a lap down. I had to get my lap back to even have a shot at winning the race. The race was getting ready to be rained out. Everybody knew that. It’s just hard to say when you’re running real hard and trying to win and got rain coming and you’re a lap down, you race hard. I hate that it wrecked all them cars. I hate that me and Brian had to get on bad terms on it. Those things I regret. I’m out there racing and made mistakes before, probably won’t be the last one I make.
Talk to Brian: “Yeah. I called him this week. He said it was intentional on the television. I wanted him to make sure it wasn’t intentional and I didn’t have a problem with him and I wouldn’t wreck him intentionally. Just trying to clear that up with him.
What happened on pit road: “I had some issues with the brakes all weekend. We put some more rear brake on the car and it seemed to help it because I was sliding through the box in the first part of the week. I wasn’t paying attention coming around that second stop when I missed my stall. That was just my fault. The next stop, you know, that was unfortunate . We weren’t on the line until I turned the car and turned the tire to the right. That call could have gone either way. That official decided to choose that direction.
Pit road: “That’s just my responsibility. I take full responsibility for everything that happened on pit road. There’s nothing they can do to help me. It’s up to me to make sure I get the job done, which, obviously I wasn’t getting done.’’
“It’s the Daytona 500 and everyone pretty much knew that we weren’t going to get the whole race in. When there’s no determined lap when you know it’s going to be over with. You’ve got to take all the risks. It’s a big race. It’s unfortunate that everything that happened happened. I personally do feel bad for everybody that was swept up in that wreck, but, at the same time, that was a unique situation when nobdy knew when the race was going to end and I was a lap down. One thing that is important to point out, I knew before that caution that I wasn’t going to get the Lucky Dog, so my only option was to race in front of the leaders and try to get my lap back that way because I can’t get the Lucky Dog after serving a penalty.
“There’s a lot of people that like you and there’s a lot of people that don’t like you. When you give them people that don’t like you an opportunity, they’re going to come out of the woods after you. That’s what happened this weekend.
Was Brian receptive to your call: “Yeah. Brian is pretty tough. He’s a pretty tough dude. He’s a good guy. We’ve known each other for a long time. We’ve been down that road before, wrecking each other and carrying on. It’s a tough call. When you get in an accident with somebody, whatever you believe, your fault or not, the hardest thing to do is the right thing to do and that’s call the guy up and see where it goes from there.
You call others in the wreck: “I wasn’t going to call them all up.
Vickers incident a payback for Talladega wreck few years ago: “(laughs). That’s not the case. You don’t forget things like that but after even a couple of weeks, you get over it because you’re better off in the long run to concentrate on racing your race car and finishing the best you can. You’re worse off in the long run if you concentrate on the grudges you keep and somehow find a way to manipulate them every weekend, that’s not going to get you that far. Me and Vickers have been friends for a while. The deal at Talladega was a hard, bitter pill but he was trying to win his first race. It wasn’t intentional what he did. It wasn’t the worse thing in the world to get over.
Jeff Burton discussion with you: “There was a situation there where I was trying to, I think I was a lap down and I was trying to get up there toward the front. I came off of 2 and had a good run and he was inside somebody and I made it three wide and we had just had a restart so everybody’s tires were pretty good, so I thought it was OK. There was a big sense of urgency due to the weather. He was shuffled back. Several laps later, he wrecked. He was like you doing what you did put me in that position 10 laps later. I’m like I can’t be responsible for that. So, we just talked about it. He was upset when he first got out of the car when the rain came and I was like I didn’t even really remember what he was talking about. I walked down pit road and throught about it and remembered, so I walked back down there and I said Look, I remembered what happened. I can’t be responsible for your wreck five laps later. That’s not my responsibility, how can you pin that on me? We sat there and debated my ethics and my values and all those things and ended up agreeing that I’m not a jerk and don’t’ race like a jerk. He was just hot under the collar a little bit. Bygones are bygones. He’s a good guy. We’ve got a good friendship too. I’ve always been too nice. That was the Daytona 500, and I felt like I had the car to win. I wanted to go out there and win the race. I felt like if I could get my lap back, I could get it done. I was racing everybody as smart as I could. I was racing as hard as I could.’’
