A Hampton family of six was hospitalized this morning after they inhaled carbon monoxide at their home.
The three adults and three children were taken to Sentara CarePlex Hospital suffering the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning from exposure at their home on Andrews Boulevard shortly before 9 a.m. The highest concentration of the gas registered 240 parts per million, said Battalion Chief Anne-Marie Loughran, the Hampton fire marshal.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the most common symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain and confusion. High levels of inhalation can cause loss of consciousness and death.
The victims are being evaluated to determine whether they will be transported to Sentara Leigh Hospital’s hyperbaric chamber.
The incident was caused by improper venting of a heating furnace, Loughran said.
