Google Transit helps bus riders plan trips

Public transit systems across Virginia are using a new Internet tool to make it easier for bus riders to plan their trips.

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation initiated the use of Google Transit, which Charlottesville Transit Service officials announced Tuesday in their city.

Twenty-one other local transit systems, including HRT, across Virginia also use the tool, which is offered in cities across the United States and the world.

Google Transit allows riders to navigate routes, check schedules and map the distance and time it takes between locations. Transit officials hope the service will attract more people to ride the bus.

The free tool also allows users to compare costs of bus trips versus costs of trips by other vehicles.  For more, go to http://www.google.com/transit
