RICHMOND

The cost of vanity license plates may go up $10 a year.

The House Transportation Committee today approved SB1167, which would double the fee for special plates to $20 a year. A similar measure has already cleared the Senate.

The new fee would generate about $1.5 million in revenues, according to the Department of Planning and Budget.

Triple the price

Also lets try and convince people to stop buying the Tacky religious vanity plates.
I surely don't think they should be illegal, just lets get it out to people in a way that they realize that they are tacky. When relatives come to visit me from the midwest (religious relatives, by the way) they always ask about them. I have just started shaking my head and saying "it is the south and they don't get that it is a little forceful and offensive to some people. Or that things like that are why people joke and groan about Jehovahs witnesses and LDS (mormons) coming knocking at our doors" oh well!

Better idea

Don't jack the price up on vanity plates. Continue to charge the same for all plates. To save substantial money (the equivalent of yet another tax boost) just rid us of the stupid front plate requirement. Why does Virginia continue to remain backwater? So many other states only require a rear license plate. Would this be an inconvenience to the ticketing writing semi-police in their three-wheeled carts? How many real life car chases do you see where the perp is driving backwards? Get with the program. We are sick and tired of every whimsical idea for our GA being wrapped around a $$$ increase to Joe Public. Try cutting into the fat and see how much can be saved! Thinking outside the box isn't so painful.

$35

There's a reason Virginia's got the largest % of vanity plates in the country, everyone else in the country pays $30-$70 for them. They're called "vanity plates" for a reason... bump it to $35 like everybody else, the vain will still pay.

Vanity plates

More money for license places?! Please! I already pay $97.50 for the plate now, I refuse to pay anymore. I think it's time to "express" myself in some other way....

...and another thing

It just occurred to me, many of these plates have a fee that benefits a specific cause (your college scholarship fund, cleaning the bay, pet adoption, etc.) A 100% increase in the state portion of the fee will obviously result in a decrease in the number of plates sold. So even if the overall result is more revenue for the state, dozens of charitable and non-profit causes are going to take a hit - at a time when many of these organizations are already suffering.

Bye bye plates

For $10 I can get 6 year vinyl letters to promote my business through the website name.

I think the $1.5 dollar amount is correct. They'll probably do $2.25 with the Pay-Per-View tax.

Desperation is setting in now...

I like my plates..

but not enough to cough up another $10 per year.

EACH Year.. $20. fee,

Thank Goodness for Designer Bumper Stickers, $2 each, to say what you want - change out when you want - add a photograph if you want - personnalized plates are so passee' and unnecassarily needed. I mean who nedds to advertise the type of car they are driving? on the car they are driving?? 88 mazda, get real.. loser feeeee

Proof read??

"The new fee would generate about $1.5 in revenues,"

Generate a dollar fifty? Why bother?

Based on comments, count my 2 cars out, they already lost $80 bucks!
