NEWPORT NEWS

A 7-month-old baby was in critical condition after being attacked by a pit bull Monday morning.

The boy suffered severe facial and neck injuries and was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, according to a news release from Newport News police.

He was at a baby-sitter's home in the 300 block of Barclay Road when the attack happened at about 7:40 a.m., said Kim Lee, city spokeswoman. The baby-sitter struggled to separate her dog from the baby, the news release said.

The dog was surrendered to animal control officers and euthanized, Lee said. The dog, a neutered male not quite 2 years old, will be tested for rabies. However, the dog's rabies vaccination was current and the dog had no previous history with Animal Services, the police news release said.

Detectives are investigating this as a possible case of child neglect, the news release said, but no one has been charged. The identity of the child will be withheld until detectives notify family members. The name of the baby-sitter also will not be released unless she is criminally charged.

Read it and weep...

Breeds of Dogs Involved in Fatal Human Attacks in the United States Between 1979 and 1998. Researchers reviewed a 20-year period from 1979 to 1998 to determine the types of breeds most responsible for US dog bite fatalities. At least 25 breeds of dogs were involved in 238 human dog bite related fatalities during this time span. Pit bulls and rottweilers were involved in over half of these fatalities and from 1997-1998, over 60%. Researchers note that it is extremely unlikely that pit bulls and rottweilers accounted for 60% of dogs in US households during this period thus, there appeared to be a breed-specific problem with fatalities.

Statistics and Lies

The two studies cited by various people in this thread were based on "News Reports" of dog attacks. How many news reports have you seen in the last 5 years about dog attacks other than "pit bulls"? Based on the CDC, approximately 4.5 million people per year suffer from dog bites/dog attacks, and 800,000 sought medical treatment each year for these attacks. Based on the reports in 15 years (that would average to 60 MILLION dog bites and 12 MILLION hospital visits) ONLY 1194 of the attacks were reported as being pit bull breed related. That equates to exactly 0.0095% of all dog attacks. And you wonder why people get upset over the breed bashing against pit bulls. The news hype over this breed far outweighs the reality of the facts.

Child rearing skills

One would like to think a parent would research a babysitter and weed out those who have pitbulls as much as one would like to think a responsible person would say I'm in charge of watching out for the safety of this infant so I won't have ANY dog near them while they are in my care.

This goes beyond breed of dog.

Interesting...

"Racist" against pit bulls? Really?

Wow. Never thought I'd see the day.

It's all in the upbringing

We have a pitbull and have had him for almost two years with no incidents. We also have an almost three year old daughter and seven year old son. The sitter should have never had the dog in the house with small children regardless. It is all in the upbringing and care you give to your pitbull. We walk him almost everyday and show him affection and supervise my children looking and petting him because they are small. I do think if a dog attacks another dog or a human unprovoked it should be put to sleep.

Enough Already

Enough already, lets just get rid of that whole Pit Bull breed. As for the people who want to own such dogs I really question your mental status. I mean it wasn't Shih Zhu's Micheal Vick was raising for dog fighting. If that doesn't end the arguement then the owners of these dogs are just want to be a danger to the community.

dog bite stats

Straightforward, I provided the links to where I found my stats. Can you do the same, or are you just spouting off your own "opinion"??

Pit Bull Owners Beware

When your pit bull attacks another dog, the other dog is considered property and has little value in court. When your pit bull attacks a baby, the court will see things very differently. If the owner of this pit bull owns ANYTHING, they better sell now, because any lawyer could win this case.

Help help

I'm being attacked by vicious 5 pound chihuahua--he's almost bit through my jeans and I may almost feel the bite in about 3 hours of continuous--sustained biting....
Bwhahahahahah
Get rid of the pits all of them SHEESH!
