INTERACTIVE: A Navy uniform for every occasion

Posted to: Military News Special Reports

WHEN THE NAVY changes its look, it’s no mean feat to get nearly 450,000 sailors on board. But after years of study, the service is rolling out its new Working Uniform, and Hampton Roads is first in line.

Click on the interactive presentation below to learn more about some of the Navy's uniforms.

YUCK!!!!

Went in to the old navy hospital here for a script refill, and couldn't tell what service the military member was with sitting behind the check in desk. He was wearing a kakaii shirt and dark slacks. Then I noticed a PO3 pin on his collar. And CPOs now wearing shoulder insignias? Makes it harder to tell if it's an officer walking towards you or not.

interactive brings back memories

of how handsome my dad looked in his full dress whites.

NWU's

I hated the way these looked, I didn't want to blouse my pants and I still don't like loosing the navy ball caps. I have bought 2 pairs and the jacket with liner I also purchased the turtleneck that's not shown. They really did a nice job on these the jacket it is very nice no more standing watch in the rain and being soaked all the way thru. The jacket has vents so it wont be to hot in the summer if its raining and you want to keep dry. I'm now glad they changed them and I wont wear utilities anymore. Oh and I discovered that blousing your pants keeps you allot warmer on watch. I am sold.

NWUs

As an underclassman in the NAVY, I love the new working uniforms! I finally feel proud when I walk next to Marines and other branch members on base and can hold my head high. These uniforms are sharp! We no longer look like hot garbage like we did in the utilities. It gives me a greater sense of confidence and self-esteem that the previous uniform did not provide, which is reflected in my stance, verbage, and production. They're conveniently wash-and-wear, not to mention extremely comfortable! I can't wait until we can wear them out in town! I feel like a kick-ass Max Steele action figure!

MAMA Says

Stupid is as Stupid does and that uniform is STUPID

Why not just make 'em black?

Why not just make 'em black? Is the camo so they hide behind shrubbery on a Navy ship? Who comes up with this stuff?

My earlier post

was pulled by the Pilot. Apparently they didn't like my choice of a certain word to describe these new uniforms. It started with an "F" and rhymed with "snugly". If I was still in they wouldn't have to worry about me wearing this embarrassment anywhere off base. I'd gladly take the time to change in and out of civvies to avoid that.

So I guess

the guy I saw eating lunch at Quizno's at Lynnhaven Mall wearing the NWU was in violation, or maybe the emergency was he was hungry!

Where is OUR focus?

There is no excuse for the services to all have their own versions of camoflage/digital uniforms! While the realities associated with the costs of recapitalizing our military with the F-22, Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) and follow-on tanker aircraft, the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and DDX, and US Army Future combat systems highlight the monumental budgetary hurdles facing the Defense Department, this smacks of fraud waste and abuse! An absolutely unnecessary expenditure!
From WWII through the initial years of OIF, the services all utilized the same pattern of utility/camoflage uniform for the most part. These uniforms, while not always the best, did seemingly improve over time. Why now, in the face of decreasing budgets, does the Army have the ACU, the Marines the MCU with a different version for both the desert and jungle/forest, the USAF an ACU-like but tiger-stripped pattern, and the Navy this uniform! Aside from the comfort and utility aspects, which I am sure will be excellent, and a needed upgrade, the new uniform ignores the reality that naval service members must still wear BDU (woodland camoflage) or a Desert version depending on the tactical environment. Even better, wh

Calm down

This is a major change and it's appreciated by a lot of us. The Navy seems loath to change the traditional sailor look. I can say from personal experience that female utilities (the uniform that these new ones replace) are uncomfortable and outdated. The new uniform is tougher and more protective, stands up to cuts and tears better, moves with the body instead of limiting movement, doesn't show stains as well (a huge boon when you're required to be spotless for inspections)... and frankly a lot of sailors feel like they look better (no longer like we work at the oil change garage down the street), so morale is improved.

And we don't have to stuff our pants legs in our socks anymore for battle dress. Hooyah!

Camo in the ocean.

I hope some regulation is mandatory stating some type of fluorescent attachment or garment is worn when exposed to being washed overboard.
I remember a wave coming through hanger bay 3 and washing 4 guys overboard who were just standing by elevator fours opening.

Uniform Allowance

It's funny that Sailors complain that they don't have money to buy new uniforms! The uniform allowance actually went up for the purchase of the newly prescribed uniforms. How many of our Sailors are even using their uniform allowance to purchase uniforms? I have seen far too many junior enlisted personnel with cars they can't afford, compounded by putting rims, tint and other items on them that they can't afford either. I'm willing to bet these same people haven't purchased a new uniform in a couple of years, so they see the uniform allowance as some sort of 'bonus' to be used for whatever they want to buy.

Sailors, Officers and Chiefs...STOP WHINING! Buy the uniform and wear it with pride, or get out and try to find another job that offers free health care premiums while on AD, cheap life insurance and BAH/BAS.

Uniform

What a waste of taxpayer's monies.
We have the greatest military in the world with the finest men & women serving in ALL the branches.
Why do we need a fashion show?
What next; matching bed time clothing?
Pay these Troops more money, buy them better equipment, give them more educational benefits, take better care of the wounded & their families. This is nonsense.

New Uniforms

Navy uniforms and their utility or lack of is a Joke. This will end up no different than the times when sailors get told to fix their uniform coveralls because they are not serviceable. Hides paint and dirt? Evidently none of you have ever been asked to get out of the chow line on the boat after working 10 or 12 strait hours on the flight deck even though you keep a clean flight deck jersey just for that occasion to eat chow. But the mess deck MAA thinks the stains are dirt from the days work and won't let you eat. So now what?

It's always going to be a difference of opinion between those that do admin and those that get hands on dirty. Thats not going to change no matter what.

Uniforms and their Use in daily work and Tradition should follow the KISS method, but that isn't going to happen anytime soon because we became to good at nuking things out beyond reason.

Don't make it painful and don't make it easy, make it right.

Ivor

That kind of reasoning would have sailors still wearing heavy wool pants with 13 buttons with heavy wool shirts and shoes with lacings that caught on every little thing as work uniforms. It bothers me more when the military DOESN'T change and upgrade their uniforms than when they make efforts to do so. A great example of this was when the Army stuck with the old olive drab 'pickle suits' long after they needed to replace them supposedly to 'save money.' Upgrading and updating military uniforms is an important aspect of military preparedness that is too easy to forget about and sweep under someone's desk.

new uniforms

When I served, I always said the military was the world's biggest and longest running fashion show, and I resented having to spend my personal pay for new duds of some type every so often. Things like overcoats, windbreakers, etc., do not really "wear out." In this latest example, since the new duds "hide dirt," SMs will have to determine by smell when it is time to wash them!

Interesting!

I think it's a "good-look" for the Navy. Those (tight at the butt) jeans you all wear just looks soooo..........sissy-fied.
*They do just look like the Iraqi Police though* LOL

Just need to maintain uniform descipline because I know that the younger sailors will be wearing this uniform coinciding with the latest fade.
The new uniform makes them look professional as a team as well. As oppose to wearing items that really don't go together[The peacoat you all wear with those bell-bottoms]. As far as tradition is concern; I feel that the only thing that should "resemble" the past is the dress uniform.

Lastly, I didn't know the navy was not letting their folks wear the uniform into places. Dang, I guess i'll wear my ACU's to Walmart tomorrow
(Saturday) for the heck of it.........Just because I can!!!

Finally

Finally the Navy gets a work uniform that makes sense! It hides dirt instead of highlighting it, it's comfortable with ventilation and space for needed padding and it gives them a more updated look. When it comes to work uniforms, forget tradition: go with utility!

Well..

..I had dress blues, working blues, dress whites, working whites, dungarees and blue work shirt, and coveralls! I never wore "love boat" clothes..or "Stiff upper lip British" garb as we called. Guess it was ok at Tobruk or Rommel's days! Too long a study, too much money spent! Solution: On ship-Coveralls. On base-Coveralls (Yes..and clean too) Anywhere else? Camo! Haven't seen the new uniforms, but they look ok! As to another poster who made the point about changing? YES..formation in dungarees, then change into coveralls for work in the fireroom, then change into dungarees for chow, then change back...Never had my guys change...always sent a detail to "fetch chow" and bring it back to the fireroom. Holidays? We cooked a ham and turkey on a superheated drain pipe nest! Best meals of my life! I worked out the "change clothes every 4 hours" thingy early in my enlistment!

Changes?

Eventually you won't know which branch you are dealing with! I've seen many changes and I'm not even in the military. Digital look is good for some things but is it necessary? Spec ops issue look too digitally enhanced but then again, I just look to see what it goes with! Guess it's not supposed to be a fashion statement!
