Legislators bless Chesapeake's plans to replace Jordan Bridge

RICHMOND

Chesapeake’s plan to replace the Jordan Bridge with a new tolled crossing received the approval Tuesday of the House of Delegates.

The bill, SB1550, has now passed both chambers and is awaiting the governor’s signature. The legislation authorizes the Chesapeake City Council to use a private developer to replace the old bridge, which was closed in November due to safety concerns.

The Jordan Bridge connected Chesapeake’s South Norfolk area with Portsmouth over the Elizabeth River. Drivers paid 75 cents each way to cross it.

In January, the City Council approved a private developer’s plan to build a new bridge with a possible toll of $2 each way. The legislation in the General Assembly is retroactive to Jan. 1, so it would cover that deal.

The bill does not obligate any state or local funds toward the project.

Jordan Bridge

Chris33, has no one told you that W hasn't been President for over a month? Why aren't you fussing that the new President hasn't appropriated money for the new bridge? THAT should be your complaint.

Bad News

Bad news for you. Obama's 800 billion dollar spending spree....and STILL no money for the Jordan Bridge. Who you going to hate now?

$1 trillion+ for stimulus,

$1 trillion+ for stimulus, and still a free enterprise partnership is willing to step in without subsidies. Priceless. Also the best value for the public's money. Well done Mr Shucet(sp), Chesapeake and the GA.

Just curious Chris, when are we going to stop blaming Bush? The next hurricane? If it was in jest, I missed the joke, and it's on me.
Be well.

what?????????

The entire Jordan Bridge diaster has been mishandled by the city of chesapeake for years. We are all aware of that.So a private group that will restore the river crossing and be financed by tolls is a perfect solutuion for a festering sore on the backs of the citizens of cheaspeake. As far as the busch comment.Well your just an idiot sir.

$700 Billion for Iraq

$700 billion dollars for Iraq, but no money for the Jordan Bridge. God, I hate George Bush!
