The world won’t have Blackwater Worldwide to kick around anymore.
It’s gone – in name, at least.
Company President Gary Jackson told employees late Thursday that the Moyock, N.C., company will henceforth be known by a new name: Xe.
That’s pronounced like the letter Z and rhymes with “tea” and “sea” – but not with “controversial.”
Jackson said in a memo that the company has been reorganizing for several months to “create unique brand identities for its products and services.” It is ditching the name Blackwater and the red-and-black bear-claw logo.
The Blackwater name originated at the company’s sprawling rural campus for training military and law enforcement officers.
The name drew a more negative connotation after controversies stemming from the company’s security work in Iraq, including investigations into alleged gun smuggling and the shooting of civilians in a Baghdad traffic circle.
It’s common for companies to rename in an effort to distance themselves from bad publicity, said Robert Passikoff, president of the New York marketing research firm Brand Keys Inc.
“There’s an old saying about brands: 'When you can’t change the product, you change the packaging,’” he said.
In Blackwater’s case, things have gotten so bad that the company had little choice but dump the brand, Passikoff said.
Company spokeswoman Anne Tyrrell said Blackwater’s past was only one of several factors involved in the decision. The company leaders came up with and considered several new names, she said. Xe had the best potential for brand identity but has no special meaning, she added.
Several other departments have changed names: Blackwater Airships became Guardian Flight Systems, and Blackwater Target Systems is GSD Manufacturing. The parent company for Blackwater companies, EP Investments, is simply Xe. The North Carolina campus will be called the U.S. Training Center.
“Xe will be a one-stop shopping source for world class services in the fields of security, stability, aviation, training and logistics,” Jackson wrote.
But Anusorn Singhapakdi, chairman of the marketing department at Old Dominion University, said it takes more than a name change to redeem a brand. He said core values and a solid work reputation must back up the marketing .
“That takes time,” he said.

I'll try to have this posted yet again...
That you and others who represent a distinct MINORITY among Blackwater's neighbors aren't going to get your way is just too bad. That you and yours have an axe to grind based on your own personal reasons is apparent to everyone. Seeing how you can't get your way, why don't you move? Blackwater has done nothing, repeat, NOTHING, illegal there in Currituck, Camden, wherever, counties. That's YOUR skewed, slanted term.

You have no idea. You were not there. We acted in good faith. However, this spirit of good neighborliness was taken and rubbed in our faces, as Blackwater has yet again done something which violates both the Spirit and the Intent of the Board of Commissioners Decision regarding whether or not to let those illegally established ranges to remain where they are. They are getting permits with no checks and balances. CAN YOU BELIEVE THE GUN RANGES DO NOT GET INSPECTED? LESS THAN ONE MILE FROM KIDS PLAYING BASEBALL. Yea, a Chesapeake baseball team called The Tidewater Bombers practices less than a mile where high power firearms are being used... with gun ranges that are not inspected.
People just don’t care anymore.
NO OVERSIGHT, NO ETHICS, NO CHANGE.
NO KIDDING
Yes, I have an ax to grind when people go back on their word.
They will always be called
They will always be called "The firm formerly known as Blackwater".
Shakespeare didn't have to deal with rabid terrorists...
...who want to kill all of us, destroy our way of life, behead people and use special needs women and children as suicide bombers. I don't smell a rose at Xe, I smell the sweet smell of smokeless powder that they're practicing with on their way to elminating more of the subcreatures who are trying to destroy the world as we know it. Kudos and BZ to Xe--keep up the great work!
Shakespeare had it right...
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet." Changing the name doesn't mean anything, it's still the same company with the same philosophy.

Exactly!
It amazes me!
That the people who sit at home in their indignant arrogance. You don't mind the freedoms and liberties that have been won for you by others. Then in your righteousness want to crusify the people that actually earn it for you. Why don't you take a ride down to your local military recruiters office and sign up. You do have debt to pay --- maybe you should pay it rather than running your mouths.
Good fof them!
I'm glad that Blackwater will still be around...just like the CIA, etc., this is the only way we can stay on top. If you think that just being nice and being the perfect diplomat will make our enemies out there be friendly, then you're living in la la land. Our enemies are so jealous of our way of life and freedom...they don't care about morality. So, we have to counter it and nip it in the bud. Organizations like Blackwater do what most of us don't have the guts to do...and you should be thankful for their actions. And do you have to pay for it? You certainly do...or perhaps you will go out there yourself and do the deeds (yeah, right).
What does this...
have to do with the Obama Administration....news flash blind republican sheep: WE WON.........fair and square.......and if you guys hadn't spent 8 years screwing the country to the floor we would not have to socialize everything. Enjoy your next 8 years..........retribution is fun!
