Firefighters continue to search for the cause of a blaze Tuesday night that destroyed a home on 26th Street.

The fire displaced three adults and three children who escaped because they were alerted by smoke detectors, according to a news release from the Newport News Fire Department.

The fire appeared to have started in the kitchen area of the two-story home in the 1000 block of 26th St., according to the release. When firefighters arrived at the home, shortly after 6 p.m., they found heavy smoke and flames.

It took about 25 minutes to get the fire under control, the release says.

The residents were being helped by the American Red Cross, according to Chief Scott Liebold, deputy fire chief.

The Fire Department reiterated in a news release today that working smoke detectors save lives. The department is reminding residents that Newport News homeowners who need a smoke alarm can call the "Smoke Detector Hotline" at (757) 926-8009 or go to the Web site, www.nngov.com/fire
