Afr'Am Fest is searching for a new venue after Norfolk State University killed plans to hold the popular Memorial Day music festival on its campus.
The final decision comes days after opposition from residents living near the school caused university President Carolyn Meyers to balk at the plan.
The university announced late Friday that it terminated its agreement with the Southeastern Virginia Arts Association, known as SEVAA, because the school was not given a detailed proposal that would address several outstanding issues, including security, parking and noise.
"It is with great regret the university had to come to this decision," Meyers said in a press release. "After reviewing recent feedback from our neighbors and the city, it is apparent that the NSU campus venue is not the right fit for this major event."
Festival director Mark Madison acknowledged Saturday that the group could not alleviate many of the concerns but said the group will push forward with plans to sponsor the African American cultural festival this year.
Madison said other locations were being discussed, but he did not elaborate.
"Residents have valid concerns," Madison said. "It is not the festival they don't support - it is the logistical nightmare. We could not ensure it would be anything other than what typically goes on for football games."
University officials had been studying since September the feasibility of holding the festival on the campus of the historically black university, later convening a committee to gauge the concerns, said Sharon Hoggard, an NSU spokeswoman.
Afr'Am officials approached the school after they learned that Town Point Park would not be available. The park is undergoing an $11.5 million renovation and won't reopen until early July.
While residents complained that swells of as many as 300,000 festival attendees would have a significant impact on the adjacent communities, Meyers stressed that a lack of support from the university's neighbors could derail the effort.
"We tried everything we could," Hoggard said Saturday. "Our neighbors were our first consideration. They just don't want us to do it, and they don't think it can be done in a way to keep them safe and secure. We deeply regret the decision, but we did not have a choice."
Hoggard said NSU hand-delivered a letter to residents, alerting them of the move and plans to hold a community meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 to foster a better relationship.
"I wanted to scream," said Middle Towne Arch resident Jamie Edmonds, who opposed the plan. "This is a huge victory for us. We knew Norfolk State has the right to hold it there, but just because you have the right to do something does not mean it was the right thing to do."
Norfolk Councilman Paul R. Riddick, whose ward encompasses the area, said that while he was critical of the plan, city administrators were working feverishly to find an appropriate location for the event.
"We are going to do our very best to accommodate SEVAA and make Afr'Am as close to what it is accustomed to being," Riddick said. "It is going to happen this year."

Afr'Am
has always been open to all. For years many of the vendors, attendees & performers have been non-Black. The NAACP, unlike the KKK, has never restricted it's membership to 1 race or ethnicity. In fact, it was founded by several different ethnic groups. Have some of you actually read any of these articles? NSU was willing to hold the festival on campus. They changed their opinion after input from the surrounding neighborhoods. Africa, by the way, has multiple racial, ethnic & language groups. It seems some posters need to attend this festival, Cinco De Mayo, the Asian festivals & others, just to realize just how diverse the world truly is.
Harbor park
Is there something wrong, with having it at Harbor park. Near downtown Norfolk? There is plenty of parking over there. Plenty of seats. And the performers have the whole field, to perform on.
Change
Everyone likes change. What say we do away with the Af/Am festival, the NAACP, the Klu Klux Klan and all other groups that are known for their racial make ups, including the governmentally endorsed groups. What is wrong with having an American Festival with a little of everything? Sounds like it might even cause people to mingle!
Here's an Alternative:
Since Towne Pointe Parke is not available, why not this year have an "Af'ram Gives Back" - meet at the Black Cemetery in Portsmouth mentioned in a recent Pilot article and spend the day fixing up the cemetery? The festival patrons could spend the money they were going to spend on beer and whatever else and instead use it to restore a historic black cemetery.
NSU Hypocrisy
Does the NSU Hypocrisy really surprise anyone? Shameful! But not surprising.
LOL at the people still
LOL at the people still throwing the "R" word around. People don't care about racism anymore - saying the word no longer gives you power - the boy has cried wolf far too many times. The fact is, after last year, nobody wants to host this event. That ought to tell you something. Someone will have to step in and pay someone to host it (probably the city spending taxpayer money). Looks like diversity and celebrating culture never really were anyone's goals.
Just cancel it
Just cancel it, let the artists perform at local bars and other establishments. Save the money for a rainy day.
Make money???
"Of course Norfolk hates to see all the money generated from this go someplace else" --cyns
What money? They are going to "donate" $40K to the organizers and provide city services that dont get reimbursed such as Traffic engineering,Police, Fire, Rescue, Parking attendants, Parks and Rec personnel, Waste Management, and probably a few more city services I cant think of right now.
VB suggestions are a joke, right?
Sportsplex - has like, what, 50 parking spaces?
VB Boardwalk - Careful, the tow truck drivers are already salivating at the thought of 300,000 locals driving to the beach.
I hope a suitable compromise is found. I plan to broaden my horizons and attend this year.

Everyone talks about unifying the Hampton Roads, here's a good start
Everyone also knows VB police and city officials doesn't welcome blacks..
This is not representative of the citizens views but a select few looking to redevelop the oceanfront...Replace boom boxes with briefcases they say...
While briefcases my be their idea of a good time I disagree...
We have an empty convention center close to the oceanfront that would be a great place to have the festival....
A music festival already planned at the oceanfront...This event could expand the crowded oceanfront letting people spread out with entertainment offered around but close.......
I for one a Caucasian mother would go to both…
Please VB enough of the Elvis fests and puppet shows. Diversify with the rest of the world…
