President Barack Obama will make his first trip out of the capital since taking office when he heads to Williamsburg today for a meeting with House Democrats.
The president will speak to lawmakers as part of an annual retreat at Kingsmill resort. Details of his schedule have not been released, but Emily Barocas, a spokeswoman for the House Democratic Caucus, said the session - as is customary - will be closed to the public.
Vice President Joe Biden also will be taking part in the retreat, which ends Saturday. He is expected to appear on Friday, again in private.
House Republicans had a similar gathering last weekend at the Homestead resort in Hot Springs.

Do not assume everyone here is with the GOP. I have been voting libertarian for years now and I'm criticizing the dembs because they are the ones wasting my money. The repubs retreat at the Homestead was paid for by lobbyist, and as long as my money isn't being wasted I don't care at this point.

The biggest difference between news items like this in the present time and those past is the economy. It begs a question, for either party: why do you have to go somewhere other than Washington, DC to have these kinds of meetings? It IS the economy, stupid. if the President is going to impose caps on compensation for some industries, you'd think frivolus travel would be targeted as well. You'd think...

The rooms may be paid for by the party, but the security and air force one are courtesy of the taxpayers.

too many assumptions
I wish the Pilot could be more detail oriented on what these retreats are about. Certainly if this was a Republican retreat, they (pilot) would have given us all the details. Republicans and Dems alike go on retreats to discuss issues concerning their party and Americans. They don’t go there to get spa treatments like most of you bloggers automatically assume. Heck, George Bush I and II did it many many many times and so did the Republicans and I didn't see a single post from any of you criticizing them. I guess the trip to Hot Spring the Republicans took wasn’t an issue at all wasn't it? In any case, you should be happy that they (Repubs and Dems) are out there spending money to help boost the economy which will help save jobs in the Williamsburg or Hot Springs areas.

Looks like you should follow your own advice before you start the name calling. I'll summarize a little, they spent $500,000 over the past 5 years on similar retreats. But with they way things are right now, I really don't feel like having my elected leaders spend another dime of tax payer money on a retreat.

They are both using distortion and fear tactics in order to shove an irresponsible spending bill down our throats. Besides Obama threatening an irreversible recession, Nanny Nancy told reporters the other day that if this bill does not pass this month we will loose 500 million jobs. That is 500,000,000. We don’t have but about 150 million in the work force. Where does the other 350 million come from??
Gee, the last time one of our leaders presented distorted or misleading information he was raked across the coals. Where is the liberal outrage now??? Sure, this doesn’t mean sending our men and women off to fight in a mismanaged war, but it may have the potential of many more lost jobs.
