Pit bulls seized in N.C.; 146 in Wilkes destroyed

Posted to: Crime News North Carolina

Wilkes County animal control destroyed 146 pit bulls associated with a kennel whose owner was convicted of 14 felony counts of dog fighting.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports that the dogs were destroyed on Tuesday following an order issued the previous day by Superior Court Judge Ed Wilson Jr.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, deputies in Gates County seized more than a dozen injured dogs from a home just outside Sunbury, WVEC-TV was reporting this morning. Authorities said they also found the burned bodies of dogs, believed to have been used for fighting.

Other items were seized from the Gates County home and officials said they found bloody carpet and a barn with blood on the walls. An investigation was continuing.

Representatives of The Humane Society told the judge in the Wilkes County case that the dogs should be destroyed because they had been bred for generations to be aggressive.

Authorities seized 127 of the dogs in a raid on 61-year-old kennel owner Ed Faron's property on Dec. 10, 2008. The rest of the dogs have been born since the raid.

A number of animal rescue groups had offered to place the dogs, but none of their representatives attended Monday's hearing when the judge was considering a ruling.

A waste of time

A waste of time to try to defend the breed. I was told by a local TV newsperson who owns pit bulls, that they are instructed by their bosses to sensationalize pit bull stories. I'm not saying that everything in print is a lie. In my case I am very lucky. I have a pit that is a great dog and i haven't had any problems as of yet. If someone were to break in my home, I'm sure he would naturally defend it. After that, the dog would be the very least of their problems. In other words, never mind the new amputation from the dog. The homeowner is the one you should really worry about. He's the one that's about to make anything you saw in Pulp Fiction look like child's play.

Beware of the cockerspaniel

Beware of the cockerspaniel fighting rings. I bet if Mike Vick hadnt been caught, he would have started a new fad. The same people that want pit bulls, rapists, robbers and murderers should all be put on an island and see what happens. All you bleeding hearts would beg to come back to reality in a week. Banish the breed!

Nancyc...I am in favor of

Nancyc...I am in favor of putting down bank robbers, rapists and murderers! What a great world this would be if that were the case. I bet the crime rate would be much better if that were the case.

nice witch hunt

...on a breed most of you "kill em all" people have probably never even seen live in doggy (as they are not people). They were once known as "nanny dogs" because of their reputation as wonderful family pets. It's the thug culture that has created this hysteria over the breed itself, based on how they tried to make themselves look more tough using a dog whose image they cultivated to promote fear. As with ANY animal, proper training and socialization is a must. A couple years ago a lab in Colorado ripped a little boy's face off and that barely made a ripple in the news, and never hit anything national. Dogs are animals, period, and banning ANY particular breed will not magically eradicate dog-related fatalities.

Not the Breed?

If one were to educate themselves, as a previous posted requested, they would find even more evidence for their prejudice against this breed. Why do you think it is always pit bulls bred for dog fighting rings? I know a Cocker Spaniel may bite, but you don't see people paying money to watch them kill. Ask yourself why this breed is always the one in these cases. It's because they are dangerous.

Re: Save the animals

What about the animals that these horrible dogs kill every year? What about the people they kill....where are their rights?? Get rid of the breed. If I could afford to purchase every litter of this breed and then have them put down humanely, I would!

When animals pay taxes.

When animals pay taxes, they can have rights. Rights go hand in hand with resposibiities and at this point I don't see anyone's pet having responsibilities to the communities which shelter them.

Futhermore, as far as PittBulls are concerned, they are a menace to the community. In 2008 Pitbulls accounted for 65% of all fatalities from dog attacks. The next two closest breeds are Rotties and Wolf-mix and Chows.

Pitbulls

I been reading some of these comments with such amazement. I did not realize that so many people are so ignorant about pit bulls. What travesties have been committed against these dogs thoughout time. Some of you are just angry at life or had a bad experience. However, these dogs are the victims, they were the ones who suffered at the hands of man. (who are the real animals, in my book, its people who hurt, mime and kill for pleasure or sport) The Courts and our government needs to enact laws to protect all living beings including the ones without voices. Would you being yelling to kill all white or black men for committing robbery, murder, rape, etc. for the same reason that you are yelling to kill all pit bulls. I can't say it enough, ignorant, ignorant, ignorant.

You people need to educate yourselves on Pitt Bulls and other so called dangerous dogs. People are the ones who make these dogs fighters no dog is born to be a fighter.
------------------------------------------------------

Ahhh, but some dogs are more predisposed to being vicious than others, in temperament and in physical capability. You don't find many cocker spaniels that can rip your face off.

Pit Bulls whether rightly or wrongly are a breed that, more than any other hits the newspapers as aggressors in an attack. They should be treated under the same municipal ordinances as a wild animal.

You people need to educate

You people need to educate yourselves on Pitt Bulls and other so called dangerous dogs.

No I really dont. All I need to do is arm myself so if one of these precious lovely animals comes "AT ME" in a threatning matter..........................

Pitt Bulls

You people need to educate yourselves on Pitt Bulls and other so called dangerous dogs. People are the ones who make these dogs fighters no dog is born to be a fighter. Until we treat animals and humans with compassion we are always going to have misery in this world. It has been proven over and over again that almost any animal can be rehabilitated. Look at the VICK dogs. Do some research, educate yourselves, don't just jump to conclusions. If it continues in this vain 20 lb dogs will be seen as a danger and be put to sleep. Breed Specific Legislation is wrong!!! Animals should also have rights, not just people.

gosh, Speed,

maybe because the cases have not gone to court yet? ya think?

Chaulk it up as one more

Chaulk it up as one more reason to ban pit bulls. I don't care who you are and what you feel for your particular dog, but I have personnally known 4 people injured by these vicious animals, even to the point their owners believed these dogs were good natured. My mom was attacked two years ago by a pair of them while visiting her friend. They were her friend's dogs and they are still alive. My mom suffered severe pain and scarring. Three children, three separate incidents. One required extensive surgerie; the second was lucky not to loose her eye; and the third was a recent attack by their puppy, luckily nothing serious occurred. I have known many other dogs and their owners over my life and I can only say there has ever been one other breed that I have known to attack someone - a grumpy old llasa opsa - so, no, not all dogs attack as frequent as pit bulls. I say ban the lot of them.

PETA

How many people here have visited the local shelters recently? They're filled beyond capacity with attractive, sweet, good-natured, well-behaved and HOMELESS animals. The shelters have limited resources and it is unjust to ask them to rehabilitate bred-to-be violent pit bulls, when so many other dogs - not in need of rehabilitation - are being euthanized.

About PETA - they do a LOT of good in our community. Go visit their dog park or look at the many free dog houses they've built. As I type this, my own doggy is resting at my feet, recovering from her recent spaying, performed by PETA at 1/4th the cost of a regular vet's bill. The people at PETA treated her (and me!) with much love and respect.

PETA does so much for our animals and for Hampton Roads. Why not look at all the GOOD that they do??

Pitbulls are beyond saving

These dogs can't be save they are a liabliity. Of course there will be dogs that could have been adopted; however there is no way to tell which ones will go off eventually or what would trigger it. Pitbulls, rottweilers, and presa canario's constitute 80% of reported dog attacks according to the Clifton dog study. This is an astonishing trend that will continue because people keep taking the chance on these canines bred for violence. I just hope these dogs attack their own idiot owners, bring a little bit of darwin back into the mix. Why with all the breeds of dogs would you take a chance, its like playing russian roulette.

Speed and Billy

That is an excellent point! I agree with the slap on the wrist being counter productive. History shows the offenders will be out in a couple months and setting up another operation 1 town over. The girlfriend's probably already starting to look around.

You should call PeTA and offer to volunteer to help them organize a protest to express your outrage. They are usually quick to respond to situations like this in our community, but since you've got more time on your hands I'm sure you could make a big difference by leading the charge.

SpeedYellow........great

SpeedYellow........great point, you are so correct. They both didnt get the time they deserved.....5 years minimum! PETA, what a joke, such a waste of time and money, they should have been shut down after putting those animals in the dumpster. P.S. I love a good steak!

Not the same

First, Michael was sentenced because of the interstate gambling, not the dogfighting, per say. These individuals should be given mandatory jail terms instead of a slap on the wrists. This is a horrible crime full of greed, hate and cruelty. As for the dogs being put down I have no real opinion. I will say that I distrust most dogs in general and certainly feel no warmth towards a pitbull. I'm not a dog hater (I bred dobie's many years ago) but this breed (and chows, shepards, collies, etc.) are known to attack unprovoked. It is no coincidence that most attacks involve pitbulls. I feel sorry for these animals. This behavior has been breed into them for years.

Equal Punishment

This simply proves that Mike Vick was punished because of who he was and how much money he had. If he deserved to be in prison for two years why aren't these folks meted the same or worse punishment? I don't see PETA jumping up and down because of these people. It would seem they are only outraged and offended if the media is paying attention to them.

Pit bulls are a very

Pit bulls are a very aggressive breed and I agree with the Judge. Its a sad reality, but those breeds are bred for aggression. They should be outlawed as pets. The crying shame of all this is the mediocre sentences that these dog fighters are getting for their trade. 5 years with no parole would be alot better of a sentence. With the money that is made off dog fighting, these people believe the reward far outweighs the risk. Contact your Congressman and demand that minimum punishments be suited to the crime for such henious acts of violence.
