Police have identified a Navy sailor found dead from a gunshot to the head inside an apartment Thursday afternoon.

Police found Caitlin Elizabeth Trask, 21, in a Navy housing apartment in the 200 block of 32nd Street shortly after 3 p.m. Trask was stationed on the carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower, police said.

Another sailor, identified by police as 22-year-old Darren William Mackie, has been charged with murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. Mackie was stationed on the Kearsarge, according to police.

Police said Trask's body was found inside Mackie's apartment.

The shooting, the first homicide of the year in Newport News, is still under investigation.
