An Old Dominion University student was treated at a hospital and released early Friday after he apparently was attacked with a stun weapon and robbed while skateboarding near campus, according to a university spokeswoman.
The student, not identified, was in the 1200 block of 42nd St., just south of the main campus and near Hampton Boulevard, about 11:30 p.m. Thursday when a lone assailant approached him from behind, said Jennifer Mullen, the spokeswoman. University police said they believe the robber used a stun gun on the student before taking his cash, Mullen said.
The student returned home and Friday morning reported the robbery to university police and went to the hospital, she said. Mullen issued a safety alert Fri day to the campus community.
Several robberies and other crimes around ODU’s campus this school year have received attention and prompted calls for more protection. The university has extended the hours and expanded the routes of its shuttle system.

I can tell ya, ALOT of
I can tell ya, ALOT of students HAD to live in that stank area because of the low rent. Most students were in places that ran along Kellem ave. Now, being the strapping young lad that I was, I still know god was on my side on one or two occations walking home and making it. They just need to bulldoze everything from kellem to Colley ave.

1200 42nd St.
252 crimes reported. (no idea how you got 900?? I tried all combinations)
However earlier you posted concerning the safety at ODU, this is not ODU but a neighborhood near ODU. If you use ODU's address, then the crimes drop to less then 50 in a year. I will concede that the neighborhood around 42nd St. is not the best area but ODU's campus is safe and I would have no problem letting my children attend there. However I would not allow them to live near 42nd St. This area is attractive to students because the rentals are cheap however cheap rentals will also attract undesirable tenets. My children would either live on campus or in the Larchmont area.
Chilling
When young guys in high school skateboard, they are usually near home with no money and no key. This skateboarder must have been followed quite a ways for the robber to know he was likely to have money (i.e., a college student who had to carry key and ID to get back into housing). I find this pretty scary.
ODU Campus
I am a former post-graduate student from ODU. The school has done a very good job of cleaning up the area around the campus and providing security. However everyone should realize that if you go outside the immediate campus area, you are placing your life in jeopardy. Crackheads, thugs, drunks, and gang members are abundant and the city does absolutely nothing about it. The city leaders are oblivious to the problem and fail to come down hard on these criminals for fear of a "racist" backlash from the public. I say every criminal in this area needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and no more paroles. Keep them locked up. Flood the area with undercover patrols and start arresting these idiots.
Terrible
Yea the address listed is one block off campus and right next to the Hotel, ODU bought as a dorm. I think they call it, "The Inn." The university just happens to be surrounded by terrible neighborhoods on 2 sides. Luckily its bordered by water on one side or I am sure it would be surrounded by terrible neighborhoods on 3 sides. Its a tough place to be for ODU. IF they want to grow and be a marquee university they have to clean up not only the campus but the area around it.
It is time
that Norfolk spent money on police enforcement rather than squandering it on light rail, ocean view and downtown. We're tired of this. The time has come for a complete renovation of the city council!
Old Home Sweet Home
WHERE ARE THE ODU POLICE??? They are more worried about busting fraternity parties (KD593) and arresting people for drunk in public! I have seen them cruise up to Tanner's Creek for dinner on a Segway!! What is that all about? I told the female officer that I was glad my tuition dollars were going somewhere good. She explained that it was paid for by the State. Even better, my tax dollars!! Someone should really examine the ODU police budget; seems they get a few new cars every year. Why are there not more emergency call boxes in the entire ODU area, like there are in the public lot downtown by the housing project? Poor excuse for police work!!

Okay, so I tried again with the address listed in this story which was 1200 42nd St...the results were worse= 948 results found
I used Jan 07 to Dec 08.
This is just not that difficult to query!
ODU safety
ODU address: 5115 Hampton Blvd, Norfolk
Crimes between Feb. 13 2007 and Feb. 13 2008 : 36 crimes reported within 0.25 miles.
MCSEVA
42nd St is not just near ODU but runs all the way to Granby. I typed an actual address for near ODU and 42nd St and did a search for the past year. 36 crimes within 0.25 miles of that location, a lot less then the 366 that you reported.
