Two Va. Beach pit bulls caught after two dogs killed

Posted to: Crime News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

Two pit bulls are in Virginia Beach Bureau of Animal Control custody after they allegedly killed two other dogs and threatened a third Friday night.

Emergency dispatchers began getting calls at about 7 p.m., said spokesman Wayne Gilbert.

The first call came from the 700 block of Aragona Blvd. with a report of dogs fighting. A beagle was found with severe trauma and had to be euthanized because of its injuries.

At 7:48 p.m., dispatchers got a call from the 700 block of Crepe Myrtle Lane that something had killed the resident's small, mixed-breed dog. Gilbert said the dog was covered in dog bites.

At 7:53 p.m. a caller reported two pit bulls in a yard at the 4800 block of Overman Ave., and then at 8:05 p.m. another caller reported two pit bulls in her yard that tried to attack her pit bull. The caller scared the dogs off.

Animal control officers caught two pit bulls nearby a few minutes later, Gilbert said. The two dogs - a 6-month-old male and a 3-year-old female - will remain in animal control custody until Feb. 10, and investigators hope to find the owner.

Anyone with information about the dogs is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP (562-5887).

a word about poodles

When was the last time you read or heard about a Poodle attacking a human or anything else?

Just curious.....

Not Genocide...

Most people would be okay with the idea of a special license for Pit Bulls and Insurance. Just like I have to register my firearms, which are locked up. I have to register my firearms and I maintain insurance just in case there is an accident. People with Pit Bulls should have to maintain a Special License for the animal and maintain insurance just in case there is an accident.

Plus, the licensing fees could be used by Big Daddy Kaine to fund his Pre K programs ;-)

Again, as an owner of a Pit you have a special responsibility. Sorry, the idea that any dog is just as dangerous is rather ludicrous especially when you look at the numbers. One death caused by a Cocker Spaniel, 66 caused by Pure Bred Pits... The argument no longer holds water.

Regulate, Tax, Fine

Anyone who wants a pit must face strict regulations such as requiring microchipping for tracking purposes and proper insurance. They should also pay a special city tax and sterilization should be required unless one obtains a breeder’s license. Owners should face large fines if their Pit escapes and automatic jail time if it injures or kills an animal or human.

No one disputes that other dogs bite but the issue is the severity of the bite and the ease of stopping the dog during the attack. The Pit is bred for its' tenacity, strength and animal aggressiveness. They are very difficult to stop when they do attack and combined with immense jaw strength, guarantee a very serious injury at best, making them more problematic than most other dogs.

Just the breed...

I was a volunteer at the SPCA in Richmond last year and I must say i would estimate it to be a 95% population of pit bulls. People just do not understand that this breed likes to tear things up, its just the way it plays. Some people have trained pitts to be wonderful companions, but i honestly do not think it is responsible to own one. I just would not want that risk. I read a story on yahoo 2 months ago about a lady who "loved her wonderful pitt bull of TWELVE years" until it killed her. Some animals just are not meant to be pets. Like cats. :) just kidding...kind of.

So basically...

So basically, what alot of commentors are suggesting is genocide of the entire pit bull breed. Now apply your same logic to human beings. Would it be all right to wipe out an entire race just because they are statistically proven and more likely to committ a violent crime? My oh my how wonderful of a world it would be.

You CDC Site Betrays You

If you go to CDC and pull down the following PDF you also see that "Pure Bread" Biting Death Totals for Pit Bulls is #1 at 66 deaths from 1979 to 1998. http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/duip/dogbreeds.pdf. There were 11 mixed breed biting deaths that would bring the total to 77. Pure Bread Cocker ranks in at 1 one death.

Yes, I do know what a Pit Bull looks like. My wife's grandfather had one that was as sweet as could be to him and his wife. But not to me, my daughter, and my wife. We let the dog smell us, we avoided touching him, let him sniff us, we avoided eye contact but 4 times he tried to bite me, 2 times my wife, and 3 times my daughter. We were watching her and made sure she made no movements toward the dog or the dogs belongings.

You have more responsability as the owner of a Pit then a wiener dog because it is bread for Gameness. Meaning that it will continue to do that which comes natural even in the midst of great pain. or, It is a determination to master any situation and never back down out of fear. It was developed in pit bulls by many generations of selective breeding. ***From American Pit Bull FAQ***

god bless the pit bull

May they be banned like cigarettes in Virginia.

wow, really?

"She may NEVER attack, but she might. There's a higher probablity there than with another breed."

This is absolutely untrue. Show me some proof of the probability. You guys are just going off of what has been popularized. People that know about dogs, know what you're saying is untrue.

Here's some truth for you: http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/legislation.php

How many people actually know what a pit bull looks like? A lot of people get attacked by dogs and just call them pit bulls because they are identified by the victim.

Even the CDC says that the breed is not cause of a dog's predisposition to biting or attacking, rather the cause is irresponsible owners.

Yes 2wards,

some pitbulls are very sweet, many are up until they kill. I'm sure the babysitter thought her dog and this infant would grow up to be the best of friends. My friend with the Chow just knew his daughter and their pet were meant to be there for each other. I will pray for your two nephews. If your dog ever attacks, they would be the most likely suspects. They are playmates to her until they cross a line. She may NEVER attack, but she might. There's a higher probablity there than with another breed. it is also more likely to be a violent attack than if you had a golden retriever

2wards open your eyes

The reality is that there are lots of irresponsible people out there. You love your dogs so much, how would you like it if they were malled by some other dog? Would it make you feel better to say it's the owner's fault? No it wouldn't, you would just want your dog back. Do the rest of us a favor and find another breed to love. Pitbulls are a hazard and even if YOURs is cute and lovable, the rest of us would prefer not to suffer the consequences if you're wrong.
