Poll: Blacks in South believe U.S. is on right track

Posted to: Elections Nation - World News Politics

A new poll of African-Americans in southern states shows that 90 percent approve of President Barack Obama and many think his election will lead to less discrimination.

The Winthrop/ETV Poll was conducted among blacks in 11 states between Feb. 6 and Sunday, a press release said. Results were released Thursday.

Among its findings:

- African-Americans in the South gave Obama a 90 percent approval rating; they gave Congress an approval rating of less than 36 percent

- While 85 percent said the U.S. economy is tanking, 70 percent still said the country is on the right track

- Seventy-five percent said they believe the election of Obama will lead to less discrimination in the United States.

The poll involved 659 people in Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, Arkansas, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.82 percent.

The Winthrop/ETV Poll is conducted by Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. and South Carolina ETV.

you have made your decision

"Yes, it's a new direction but it's the wrong one. If this goes through, by children won't enjoy the same standard of living I have."

You have made that decision bases on less than 45 days in office. WOW!

wrong direction

With the President's new budget, the government will (assuming it goes through) control 25% of the economy permanently (health care and energy). It raises taxes on the people in this country responsible for job creation. He says he's calling for "shared sacrifice" but it isn't true. Under his plan, almost half of all Americans will pay no income tax. What sacrifice? He's going to accelerate the percentage of Americans who are net leaches on the system. People point to Europe as a Utopia because of universal health care, etc. The problem is that at least in Europe the citizens understand their part of the social contract - give me health care, a retirement, public transit, etc, and I'll pay 40% of my income (at least) in income taxes. Under Obama's plan that isn't the case. Bread and circuses.

Yes, it's a new direction but it's the wrong one. If this goes through, by children won't enjoy the same standard of living I have.

you call me gullable

You call me gullable because you don't agree with me, and my choice to support President Obama. This country could not continue on the George Bush path, but you don't have to agree. It really doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is our country gets turned around, and President Obama will do his best to get that done. That's more than I can say for Bush.

gullable

Or was that supposed to be a rhetorical question?

Equal

We will all be equally poor. I guess we were tricked into thinking change is good. Apparently change meant put the country in to a crippling debt, that is currently at almost $12,000 per EVERY person in the US. How much tax will we need to pay, just to break even?
The good news . . .the Republicans should be able to win the next election in a landslide.

hey..........I'm white

I'm white and I totally approve and agree with President Obama. What does that make me?

What a bunch of Nobs!

It's amazing that everything is still about being discriminated against! No matter what the situation may be they fall back on that old "it's because I'm black" argument. Thats really very convienant isn't it? Blame every one and everything except yourself for the situation that your in! That's why the crime rate is committed by over seventy percent blacks vs whites. The statistics are there to prove it. Seems like to me the African - American community has some house cleaning to do within it's own house!

yes, really

ptown67, you're right on the money. Twine calls believers in the Second Amendment "Jethros" and "backwoods, gun-loving Bozos." Now he apparently believes that anyone who doesn't believe Obama walks on water is a racist.

His type of comments do not lend lend themselves to intelligence discourse. The good news is that his ilk will more than likely over reach and irritate the electorate to the point that the Dems will lose Congress in 2010. Remember the elections of 1996 and 2006.

Really?

Twine. You have just tried to pin an inappropriate and inaccurate label on those who hold an opinion that opposes yours (presumably). Name-calling is the first refuge of those who are wrong but lack the intelligence to formulate a cogent argument.

Blacks were snookered by Obama

Blacks who voted for Obama because of the color of his skin were foolish. They have absolutely nothing in common with him. Obama's relatives were never slaves. He was raised by WHITE people. He had to make a choice in life which he would be called: White or Black. He chose black because it was to his advantage. And as for blacks being enslaved by whites, let us not forget the blacks right here in this United States that came from Africa and owned slaves ! Google the name Ana Kingsley and read up on this African slave that married a white man and owned not one but FOUR plantations with slaves !!!! Oh and one more thing,I know many of you blacks won't admit that you voted him because of the color of his skin, but by voting for him because he is "black" you are being racist.
