Razing of local golden arches feeds nostalgia

Posted to: News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

On Sunday, they’re going to demolish the McDonald’s at the corner of Independence Boulevard and Bonney Road. Hard to get nostalgic over a McDonald’s, but signs on the drive-through say the place has been serving customers for more than 30 years.

That might not seem like a long time ago. But if you look it up, it’s been about 30 years since the McDonald’s Big Mac commercial showed people rattling off the ingredients – “Two all beef patties special sauce …”

– and featured a voice at the end saying, “Far out!”

They’ll tear down this retro McDonald’s, assistant store manager Taesha Ortega said , and in three months open a “dynamic” new one. Customers have been lamenting the closing, Ortega said, because many come once a day or more.

“We’re just an average McDonald’s, in one of the older buildings,” she said, “but we try to be friendlier than most.”

As if on cue, Janie Arnold pulled away from the drive-through window, stopped and rolled down her car window:

“Write good stuff about them,” she called out. “It makes a difference to the customer if someone says 'Hello,’ gets your order right, says 'Thank you’ and smiles.”

The staff from this McDonald’s probab ly will be distributed to other Mickey D’s locations while the new one goes up, Ortega said. They might not return to restaff the shiny new restaurant as a unit. If not, Ortega said, they will miss it.

“Even if you don’t live in this community,” she said, “you become part of it.”

Keeping a DRIVE-THRU?????????

Must have something to do with the master plan of Town Center as it is not the easiest place to get in and out of. Drive down Bonney Rd, make a u turn somewhere and back only to have to circle the building to get in line. Could it be within walking distance to the corporate offices, nah! Easy to cross 6 lanes of traffic from the west side of the road? Nah! And a permit to tear down and rebuild? Hear that Burger King? Hmmmmmmmm

"Ortega said, because many

"Ortega said, because many come once a day or more." Once a day or MORE! I'm no health nut myself but that's preponderous! HaHa

There was a big article in the Pilot just the other day describing the heavy burden Dare County bears as they weigh various options for dealing with their enormous number of husky kids. I wonder...do the habits Ortega describes contribute at all to Dare's problem?

Retro McDonalds

I lived in the Metro Detroit area much of my life and theres a truely retro style McDonalds in a suburb there on Telegraph road, its styled after the original McDonalds from the 50's and its a popular resturuant even today.

I've gotta say

From someone with a really crazy schedule who ends up eating fast food more than she'd like to.... I'd much rather stop by this McDonald's than pretty much any other drive thru in the Hampton Roads area. I hope they'll be keeping the same employees! They really are very friendly.
