Evidently, one sure-fire recipe for a Norfolk victory goes as follows:
- Induct a class of Hall of Famers;
- Add Binghamton Senators;
- Simmer for 60 minutes.
Smashing tribute
Streaking Brandon Segal and Justin Keller each scored two goals as the Admirals made it 2 of 2 on Hall of Fame nights at Scope. Last season, Norfolk treated its inaugural inductees to a 5-0 win over Binghamton.
Class act
The Admirals honored new Hall of Famers Mark Bernard and Victor Gervais in a pre-game ceremony hosted by team president Ken Young. Bernard was on hand while pre-recorded remarks from Gervais were broadcast over the video scoreboard. Gervais was advised not to fly in from Canada after breaking a bone in his foot.
The Admirals were on the ice for the ceremony, and afterward, captain Zenon Konopka and alternate captains Segal and Brandon Bochenski congratulated the new Hall of Famers personally.
No place like home
No Admiral enjoys home ice more than Keller – all 10 of his goals this season have come at Scope. Friday’s game marked his return to the lineup after a five-game absence because of a lower-body injury.
Four of those games were on the road, and while his teammates were away Keller used the time to work out by himself at Scope.
“It sucks being injured, so I wanted to put the extra time in to get back as soon as I could,’’ he said.
On a roll
Segal has scored goals in five straight games and has eight tallies during that span. He also has 21 for the season, a career high and tops among Admirals.
Segal credited the return of Paul Szczechura from Tampa Bay and the reforming of the dynamic line of Segal, Szczechura and Radek Smolenak for much of his success.
“The confidence is there, and we feed off each other,’’ Segal said. “It’s nice to have our line back.”
Bo knows playmaking
Regarded primarily as a goal-scorer, Bochenski earned No. 2 star honors with an all-around effort featuring two perfect set-ups for Keller’s goals, including one where he made a steal in the corner before feeding his teammate in the slot.
“You can now put Brandon in the category of a responsible, all-around hockey player,” Admirals coach Darren Rumble said. “I really think he’s added that element to his game.”
Ice chips
Jay Rosehill accounted for Norfolk’s first goal with a rare power-play tally when he deflected Grant Potulny’s shot from the right circle. Rookie goalie Riku Helenius made 34 saves for his third win in seven decisions. The Admirals improved to 18-6 lifetime against the Senators at Scope. Friday ’s game was Norfolk’s sixth in the last eight days. Defenseman Kevin Quick had a career-high three assists.
