Residents of Buxton, N.C., warned to boil water

Posted to: News North Carolina

A water main break on Highway 12 disrupted water service to Buxton and officials are asking residents to boil their drinking water.

The break was announced Sunday and happened near the intersection with Lighthouse Road, according to an advisory posted on the Dare County Web site.

Customers may see discolored water or low water pressure until the service is completely restored, according to the advisory.

The water carries the potential for contamination because of cross connections or back siphonage, the advisory said.

Water should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute before drinking or using to make coffee, tea, other beverages or ice.  wrote. If boiling isn’t possible, one teaspoon of bleach can be added per gallon of water used. The water should have a slight odor of bleach.

Boiled or bottled water should be used by pregnant women and for infant formula, according to the advisory.

As of Sunday, no contamination had been found in the water, but officials were planning to collect samples as soon as service is restored.
