Kaine to restore some aid to WHRO radio station

NORFOLK

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine's budget amendments probably will restore $200,000 in state funding to WHRO next year, its president said Tuesday.

"It's a good day," said Bert Schmidt, president and CEO of the public broadcasting company.

Kaine had recommended a $640,000 reduction in statewide public broadcasting aid for the 2009-10 year. The General Assembly in February increased the reduction to a total of $1.64 million.

Kaine sai d Monday that he would issue a line-item veto for the $1 million cut that the legislature sought but would leave intact the $640,000 reduction. "That level of cut was well out of character with the cuts that other programs suffered," he said.

Schmidt said the reductions were likely to be divided equally among the state's five stations. That means Kaine's veto probably reduced WHRO's share of the cuts from about $325,000 to less than $130,000 next year.

Kaine's action, Schmidt said, reduces the prospect of layoffs or programming cuts, though he could not yet rule them out. "We're a $15 million organization, so we will find a way to absorb this," he said.

He credited local supporters who lobbied legislators to scale down public broadcasting reductions, which at one point could have cost WHRO $650,000.

WHRO is in the midst of a spring fund raising drive. The goal, Schmidt said, is $400,000.

Warner and Kaine policies...

have landed us in a huge state recession. It's time to stand for principals and not liberal platitudes. It's time to give relief to the tax paying citizens of Virginia. Where did the $500,000,000 "surplus" go that Kaine bragged about? There is no such thing as a "surplus"! It is overtaxation to say the least. It's time to kick out the neo-marxist democrat party up in Richmond and get someone in there who isn't worried about the next election cycle and whether or not they can carry it for their party! You take Warner, Webb or Kaine and have them run on the platform they ran here anywhere else in the country and the democrats in those states would have run them out of town. These 3 clowns are not the rule, they are the exception to mainstream liberal democrat "philosophy" of anti-guns, anti-religion and anti-capitalism.

re: Why is it?

EvanJ asked:

>>>Why is people trying to support public broadcasting so quickly jump into name calling?<<<

Because as a general rule when Liberals are given an opinion contrary to their own, they generally reply with an insult or something uncivil because logic and rational thinking cannot support their view(s).

Mr. Ragsdale blindly illustrates my point in this matter. Additionally, he, like most Liberals, would rather complain about something rather than act on their dissatisfaction with an issue (Tidewater, NOT Hampton Roads "being so behind”).

After all, it is easier to toss around insults and complain rather than act...

Why is it?

Why is people trying to support public broadcasting so quickly jump into name calling?

Yay!

Though I also think the interstates need some repair, I am happy to see public broadcasting receive funding. :)

Try being polite.

What do potholes have to do with WHRV-FM? It is because of pessimistic people like you Hampton Roads is so far behind. Go back into your cave.

Simple answer. It goes back to an elementary school government lesson. Government should provide for the fundamental needs of the citizenry. WHRV-FM is not a need, but a want. Pothole maintenance is a need.
