NEWPORT NEWS
Hampton police weren’t the only officers targeting Phish fans for drug violations over the weekend.
Newport News police said Wednesday that they, too, arrested fans of the jam band, which played a three-night show at the Hampton Coliseum on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
A Newport News police operation at hotels and motels resulted in 73 arrests, a police statement said.
Police seized about 17 grams of cocaine, about 369 grams of marijuana and small amounts of hashish, mushrooms, OxyContin, methamphetamine and Ecstasy, the statement said.
Police initiated the operation “in anticipation of increased violations” of state drug laws, the statement said, and a “majority of those arrested were Phish concert attendees.”
Hampton police announced Monday that police arrested almost 200 people at and outside the Coliseum, mainly on drug violations. Hampton police worked with other agencies in a multi-jurisdictional operation to seize drugs with an estimated street value of $1.2 million and more than $68,000 in cash.
An estimated 50,000 people were in and around the Coliseum during the weekend, Hampton police said.
