The Norva fills bill with bands Phish fans might favor

NORFOLK

The NorVa will be jamming into the wee hours of the morning this weekend.

The downtown nightspot is offering shows meant to supply the jam band fans of Phish, which is performing Friday through Sunday at the Hampton Coliseum, with similar music.

Tonight's presentation of the Disco Biscuits will give early arrivals a chance to warm up. The band blends jam band sensibilities with electronic music and is into its second decade of forging its "trance-fusion" style since coming out of the University of Pennsylvania.

On Friday night, when Phish opens its stint in Hampton, Bassnectar will play a late- night gig in Norfolk. The California band-slash-art project jams with heavy emphasis on the basslines and beat.

Steve Kimock & Friends was booked for midnight Saturday, and the show sold so well that a second date was added for midnight Sunday.

Kimock, a widely acknowledged guitar jam-master, will perform with a special guest, Hammond B3 player Melvin Seals. Both men have been associated with Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead while building long careers on their own.

The bars in The NorVa will have to close at 2 a.m., but the music wind down at 4, said Rick Mersel, whose many titles include talent buyer and marketing director at The NorVa.
