Troopers to increase enforcement on Hampton Roads interstates

Posted to: News Traffic - Transportation

Virginia State Police will have an increased presence today and Friday along Hampton Roads interstates as part of “Operation Air, Land and Speed.”

The campaign’s purpose is to save lives by preventing traffic fatalities by reminding drivers to slow down and buckle their safety belts through strict enforcement and high visibility, a news release from state police said.

This is the second time this program has targeted Interstates 264, 464 and 664 in the Hampton Roads region. Last July, the campaign yielded 3,303 violations including 1,684 speeders, 298 reckless drivers, five impaired drivers and 189 safety belt violations. Additionally, police made 21 drug and felony arrests, police said.

During that summertime operation, two state troopers with the Chesapeake division were injured when they were struck by vehicles. The state’s “move over” law requires drivers to move to another travel lane or slow down and cautiously pass any emergency vehicles or personnel stopped on the side of the road.

Also today and Friday, troopers will saturate the length of Interstate 64 from its interchange with Interstate 81 at Staunton until it ends in Hampton Roads.

Defensive driving school:

(classroom & online)
Driver Improvement, Traffic School or Defensive Driving can be one of those vague terms like "safety" that has a meaning but can be applied in many different ways. That's why we here at “24/7” Online Virginia Driver Improvement are pleased to offer a defensive driving course that defines what we mean by staying safe on the roads and preventing collisions. Whenever there's an accident, someone is at fault. Often, one of the two drivers in a collision wasn't at fault in the least! We don't want either of those drivers to be you, so our course teaches defensive driving techniques to help you visualize, anticipate, and react to the mistakes that other drivers are most likely to make.

The great thing about our Driver Education & Traffic Safety Course is that you can take it right here, right now, on our web site! You don't need to find a defensive driving instructor and go to a classroom to get the knowledge from experts in driver safety. All you need for our defensive driving course is a computer with Internet access. In

Rainy

Just saw on WVEC that they postponed the "Land, Air & Speed" Operation due to inclement weather! Ha! And it's about safety right? If it was about Safety, no matter if it was a blizzard or hailing, they would be out there. Again, why can't this operation be held 365 days a year? It IS about Revenue, Safety? Please!

Same speed nightmare

Varying speeds of traffic is necessary for smoothly flowing traffic. If everyone drove the same speed traffic would be a bigger nightmare than it is. No one would ever be able to get off exits if they ever got out of the right lane.

The speed limit on the

The speed limit on the interstate is 65-70. If anyone is actually doing 55 they are a hazard to other drivers. This is the reality.

The speed limit is what the law says it is, not what you'd like it to be. I try to go with the flow of the traffic, but I refuse to go more than a few miles above the posted limit.

Good Job Troopers

I drive on I64 and I264 to work and back each day. I drive between 55 - 60 MPH to save gas and I guess I have slowed down in my later years. However, to keep up with traffic, you have to go at least 65 even in the right lanes. I see speeders weaving in and out of traffic and once in a while causing but not being in an accident and slowing everyone behind them down to a crawl at best. I don't think we need new laws; just enforce the one's that we already got.

Speeding while commuting makes no sense

To drive a 20 mile commute at 55 MPH takes 21.8 minutes, at 75 miles per hour it takes 16 minutes. Is your life (and the life of all those around you) worth 11.6 minutes a day (5.8 minutes each way)?

I know of no one who can maintain 75 during commuting hours all the way to work anyway due to the large amount of traffic, so what are you saving by speeding, 2 or 3 minutes? Let the knuckleheads have the left lane and speed away (and pay the price), if 2 minutes of their time is so important. I would rather have the troopers pull over the people who are distracted drivers weaving all over the road while talking on their cell phones, reading the paper, putting on make-up, eating a cheeseburger, etc...

Speeding on 64? Is this a

Speeding on 64? Is this a joke? How can you get a speeding ticket when nobody is going more than 5 mph???

Repeating the good advice

A few posters gave advice worth repeating: Don't speed or break any other traffic law and you won't be stopped or fined. I'd like to see all fines at least quadrupled and licenses lost for repeat offenders, and jail time plus high fines for any who drive without a license or under the influence. Lower the blood alcohol level to .02 while we are at it.

I had a good laugh as I passed a good number of people that were pulled over today, made me feel happy as I drove by, even waved at the couple of drivers who happened to be looking my wy as I passed. I may just take tomorrow off and drive around watching people get pulled over! Does my heart good to see troopers pull people over.

Gosh, am I happy about this or what! Generate those dollars, troopers, and give me more to smile about.

Not the gripe

Everytime there is a story about how the police handle something, you people get up here and gripe about it

That's not what I'm griping about. The police are the enforcement side and are obligated to follow the law. The problem is the city and state legislatures that are writing the laws. Their preference is to set speed limits unrealistically low to collect fines, set BAC levels below so low they make criminals out of people that don't cause accidents, and, to top if off, install red light cameras to bring in cash instead of fixing intersections.
