Two more protected sites on Hatteras Island vandalized

Posted to: Environment News North Carolina

Two more shorebird protection areas on beaches in Cape Hatteras National Seashore have been vandalized, the National Park Service Outer Banks Group reported today.

Seventeen bird closure signs were destroyed at a pre-nesting area at the northeast end of Hatteras Inlet spit by Pole Road, according to a news release. Also, two posts and a barrier rope at a pre-nesting area at the west end of South Beach in Buxton were removed, the statement said. The incidents were discovered over the weekend.

Under the terms of a court-sanctioned agreement that is managing off-road vehicle access, the buffers at both areas were required to be expanded 50 meters. The Pole Road remains open, and access has been reduced on the west side of the closure on South Beach.

They were the second and third acts of vandalism at bird closures found since the pre-nesting areas were set before March 14.

Saw a Plover today

I saw a plover today. As I was coming home to KDH today, just near the Aycock Brown welcome Center. I saw a plover fly across the road and "nestle" into the bushes near the Welcome Center. Shouldn't we put up yellow tape and arrest anyone that tries to use the Welcome Center?

How sick this has all become!

Fishermen?

If you are truly a fisherman, you will be vigilant to not allow this destruction to continue. We are getting a bad rap (maybe) so it is in our best interest to find the folks who are destroying the areas and report them to the authorities. If not, we will lose the little we have and IT WILL BE OUR FAULT! The environmental folks are just trying to protect the resources and if we cannot work together, everyone loses. Stop the name calling and do something positive to restore as much area as possible for fishermane.

Questions for Fisher

What if you have very young children, or are old, or are disabled ??? It's a 2-4 mile walk in many desirable areas. Jan and Aug can make that walk a bit brutal.

Do you also carry a potty or do you walk back???? Where do you go in a thunder storm???? Lay flat on the sand, I guess.

I'm a redneck! I aim my fury towards signs! Darn those signs!!

I'll take that bet and raise you a bottle of Boone's Farm. I bet it's some activist useing this to push those boundries out further. I'll use your words to prove it. Most of us "good 'ol boys" are too fat and lazy to walk our gear to go fishing so I sure aint gonna walk all that way just to knock over a few boundry signs. Add the fact that I would be drunk, that makes me even more unlikely to walk and put forth that kind of effort to again, knock...over...signs... Here's your sign.

New young society

This new, younger society will be the ruin of themselves and everything else yet. I was taken surf fishing by an old timer down on the Banks years ago. We parked away from the beach, packed up our gear and WALKED to where he wanted to go fishing. A few people passed us in their vehicles, some honked, others offered us rides, but the old Banker turned them all down. I asked him why: "They don't respect the beach, they don't respect the land and they aren't fishermen to me." People can drive on the beach if they so wish, but as for me, I'll get a little exercise and do as the old man said and be respectful to what's out there.

You guys crack me up

First off, the little area of beach left to people? 3/4 of the east coast is developed. Second, I'm willing to bet a case of beer that the damage was done by a couple of drunk good old boys pissed off about the closures. Third, I never understood the idea of driving on the beach to go fishing. Get off your butt and walk. Use a backpack to carry your gear and beer. And yes I am a fisherman and I do surf fish. I walk in with my rods, gear, and chair.

Excellent observation Moose

First and foremost, the fact that a biased judge is in charge should be recognized and admitted.

Whatever will they do when global warming floods the OBX and it no longer exists. Oh, the poor little piper plovers or whatever they are called.

This is getting absurd

Vandalism just in time for surf-fishing season . . . imagine that! Something really stinks with the timing.

Did you see the words "PRE-NESTING"?

That means that there is NO nesting there, so
basically the barriers are protecting nothing.
So then, like another poster said the "neo-
environmentalist psychos go out and distroy
the barriers to help their cause. These birds
have plenty of nesting area all up and down the
coast without making the little part of the
coast used by humans off limits. I wonder if
NC will catch on to how much tax dollars they
are loosing from tourist going elsewhere. My
family didn't go to OBX even once last year,
normally we make multiple trips there on
weekends and vacation there at least two weeks.
This year, like last year, we will go to FL and
SC. How many empty cottages and restaurants will
it take?

Pffsht

Enviro nazi's, jeesh where do you internet conspiracy nuts get this stuff from?
