VIRGINIA BEACH

The Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Team will release “Snuffleupagus,” a rehabilitated male harp seal this afternoon from First Landing State Park.

The seal was found March 1 in Sandbridge with a broken jaw and will be released at 2 p.m. today, according to a statement from the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center.

Snuffleupagus will be fitted with a transmitter donated through the aquarium’s foundation so that its movements can be tracked and studied, the release says.

To track the seal’s movements after release, go to www.VirginiaAquarium.com.

First Colonial High School’s Earth Club also will attend the release and will kick off efforts to display educational information at national sites such as seashores and state parks, the release says.
