Weekend round-up: The best of what's happening

Posted to: Entertainment Spotlight

No plans? No problem. Here's a rundown of the best events happening in the 757 this weekend for your viewing (and doing) pleasure.

Thursday, March 5:

- Get jazzed at John Pizzarelli and Jane Monheit at the Ferguson

Jazz guitarist, vocalist and bandleader John Pizzarelli will perform his classic standards and late-night ballads with cool jazz flavor.

Grammy-nominated Jane Monheit’s classically trained voice has been compared to that of Ella Fitzgerald, whom she lists as a major influence. In her early 30s, Monheit is considered by many to be one of the most promising vocalists of her generation.

Friday, March 6:

- Discover new music with Theresa Andersson at the Attucks Theatre

Born in Sweden, Andersson now calls New Orleans home. Performing as a one-woman band, she uses two looping pedals and a variety of effects to map out an inspired kaleidoscopic musical terrain.

- Relive "Grease" with Olivia Newton John at Chrysler Hall

Adored by fans across the globe, Olivia Newton-John first won the hearts of Americans with her Grammy-winning song “Let Me Be There,” then catapulted to superstardom in the movie "Grease." Songs from that film included “You’re The One That I Want” and “Summer Nights” with co-star John Travolta, plus her mega-hit “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” and led to the most successful movie musical soundtrack in history.

Saturday, March 7:

- Jam band Phish reunites in Hampton

The popular Vermont-based band will launch its new tour from the Hampton Roads venue it has nicknamed the Spaceship. Phish, who split in 2004, will reunite for a new tour that will start March 6-8 in Hampton. Though if you don't already have a ticket to their psychedelic performance, you may not get one. Tickets sold out in under 2 minutes on Ticketmaster.com.

(Stay tuned to HamptonRoads.com for a preview video and a review of their performance.)

Sunday, March 8

- Indie rocker Lights hits the NorVa stage

Even though it's a school night, enjoy the sweet, synths sounds of Lights at the NorVa. This new wave artist will be joined by Mike Gederali and Will Thomas.

So that's the best of what's happening around town this weekend! Get out there and do something fun.
