So far this year 14 teenagers have been shot in South Hampton Roads and six have died of their wounds, according to published reports in The Virginian-Pilot.
There have been eight shootings reported in the region in which teens were killed or wounded. That number includes two separate shootings Wednesday, when two died in Chesapeake and three were wounded in Portsmouth.
For the same period last year, two teens were shot and wounded in separate incidents.
Jan. 1 - April 15
April 15, 2009, Chesapeake and Portsmouth: Two teens shot and killed in South Norfolk. Three teens shot and wounded in Portsmouth.
April 10, Virginia Beach: Isiah Jones, 18, was in the parking lot of Lynnhaven Crossing Shopping Center when he was shot and killed, police said.
March 30, Portsmouth: A group of teens were in a home in the 800 block of Jewell Ave. where a gun was being "handled" when it went off, police said. No adults were home, police said. David Gardner Jr., 14, later died.
March 27, Portsmouth: A 17-year-old boy was in critical condition after being shot multiple times in an apartment complex parking lot. Officers responding to a call about a fight found the youth.
March 19, Norfolk: A police bicycle patrolman responding to the sound of gunfire confronted Brighton E. Alderman, 18, and Marlon D. Sanders, 19, on Plume Street. A police report said the officer challenged the running pair. The report said Sanders "raised his gun towards officer and fired at officer." The officer, who was not identified, returned fire, fatally striking Sanders.
March 7, Portsmouth: A vehicle with at least two individuals inside pulled up and shots were fired into a crowd on a sidewalk in the Lincoln Park area, wounding at least seven people, four of them teens. The victims were struck with "snakeshot," a smaller but still dangerous cousin of shotgun pellets that can be fired from handguns.
Jan. 4, Norfolk: Charles Humphrey, 18, was found shot to death around 1 a.m. near 34th Street and Colonial Avenue. His sister said he had been at a party nearby.
Two teens reported shot in the same period in 2008:
Jan. 1, 2008, Chesapeake: A 17-year-old boy was shot in the head and chest with a shotgun outside his home in the 200 block of Spadina Ave. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.
Jan. 9, 2008, Virginia Beach: Police said they were called to a fight involving numerous juveniles in the 3900 block of Wilmington Road and Wilmington Court. They stopped a car and found a 17-year-old male who had been shot in the hip.
