CHESAPEAKE

An 18-year-old Chesapeake man is expected to be sentenced Aug. 7 for last summer's fatal shooting of Lonnie Aaron Andrews Jr.

A jury found Marvin Knight Jr. guilty Friday in Chesapeake Circuit Court of murdering Andrews, an 18-year-old who was shot July 1 in South Norfolk during an altercation. Knight, who was 17 at the time, was prosecuted as an adult.

The jury found him guilty of murder and use of a firearm in the crime. Assistant Commonwealth's Attorneys Karen Brown and Diallo Morris prosecuted the case, which began Monday with jury selection.

Andrews was shot in the pelvis during the early morning hours of July 1. He ran from Clark Court before collapsing in a yard in the 800 block of Lindale Drive off Campostella Road in South Norfolk, according to Montrel Joyner, who testified during the trial.

Joyner, a friend of the victim's who lived near the crime scene, said he ran to Andrews after he was shot and asked who did it.

The victim spoke a few words while on the ground before he appeared to die, Joyner testified.

Knight called a friend that morning and went to his home. Andrew Johnson testified that he was asleep when he got the call from Knight.

Then Knight showed up at his door; h is face was swollen and he had ice on his hand, Johnson testified.

"He was just telling me what happened," Johnson said.

Knight told Johnson he was in a fight with Andrews and asked Johnson if he w ould keep his two guns, Johnson said.

Hours later, Knight called Johnson again after learning of Andrews' condition, saying: "He died. He died. He's dead."

Andrews had recently graduated from Oscar Smith High and was planning to attend Virginia State University on a full athletic scholarship in the fall.

Knight was also a student at Oscar Smith.

How long???

How long does wsomething remain a head line?

MCSE VA, WHAT'S SO FUNNY?

You evidently have no pride in being apart of the BLACK race. You need to read about your history. We use to be killed by the white man. Now we are killing each other every day. I am so....tired of our young people hurting each other. Young men and women lives wasted in a grave or prison cell. So, if you think it's funny that we should LOVE, RESPECT and be at PEACE with one another. Then, maybe you are the DUMB COMEDIAN. Keep laughing.

Speedy Trial

Ellipsoid, you are correct, everyone has a right to a speedy trial but, lets look at the process. He is arrested and arreigned. Bond is set or he is detained. He then goes to Juvenial court to determine if he is to stand trial as an adault. It is passed to Circuit Court if he is tried as an adault. He goes before the court to determine if he wishes a judge or jury and be assigned a lawyer. Then he must go to court. Believe it or not, this all does not happen within a week. Once a person is arreigned, the judicial system has within a certian time to go to trial. Needless to say, your comment looks to point that he was held until his 18th Birthday so they can try him as an adault. Not the case, even if he was arrested after his 18th birthday, he is still charged at the age of the crime and the court will determine if he is tried as an adault. They dont hold people just to be able to try them as adaults.

we hate to hear this

Such a waste of two young lives...

Seems like things could have been settled without fighting or guns. At least without guns... Maybe some other folks in their area will learn something from both of these clowns meeting a demise... I doubt it though

Motive?

What was the motive for this crime? Sure think it would have come out in the trial ... in order to get a conviction.

Would have been learn what it was in the article.

who - what - when - where - WHY

opportunity - intent - MOTIVE

Juvenile justice

The Constitution speaks of the right to a speedy trial. To hold a juvenile from 17 to age 18 is not a speedy trial. Prosecutor circumvert that right by holding a juvenile past his brthday.
